Does anyone know the difference between a "folder" and a "file folder" in a directory? I ask this because a "folder" does not have the same right-click menu options as a "file folder". Software that I use that have a shell extension in that menu don't show up for "folder", but do appear and act on "file folders". Any thoughts? Thanks

Your post is a bit unclear. Ever since Windows Me 'directories' have been called 'folders' and are the same thing although people still call tham directories. I have never come across 'file folders' befeore. All the folders on my system have exactley the same right click properties.

You got me wondering about this.
I find that all of my folders are file folders.
My C:\ drive is NTFS.

Windows HELP defines folder as this:

folder
A container for programs and files in graphical user interfaces, symbolized on the screen by a graphical image (icon) of a file folder. A folder is a means of organizing programs and documents on a disk and can hold both files and additional folders.
-----------------
If you want to add right click options to folders then:

In Control Panel,
click Tools,
then Folder Options,
then "File types" tab,
then click a folder so it becomes highlighted,
then click the Advanced button,
then click the "New..." button.

Be very careful if you manually edit folder options!

If you add stuff you can't easily remove it, because the "Remove" button remains grayed out! You need a program like Enabler Even then, there is a problem that Windows might set the default action to something other than Open when you click a folder!!!

I had to add Open to File Folder (even though it appeared in Folder) and say

C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe /idlist,%I,%L

I'm speaking from experience :-)

Alright, here are the details. I enable the shell extension in Adaware 6 Plus so I can scan individual folders for spyware. Nevertheless, this should still apply to others anyway because the right-click options for nearly all shell extended software will be different, as follows:

Go to: Documents and Settings/whomeveryouare/Local Settings

On my system I see:

Application Data File Folder
History Folder
Temp File Folder
Temporary Internet Files Folder

Right click on the two different types and see the difference. If you see a difference, could someone please explain it to me. If you don't see a difference, I'd like to know what setting will change them all to file folders.

Thanks
