I've tried searching thru the archives, but didn't find anything useful, so....
When I try to rename a folder on my E: drive, I receive this error message:
"Cannot rename New Folder: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."The account I'm using, and have been using, has full admin rights. When I r-click and goto properties, it shows the folder as being read-only. If I uncheck it, apply it, OK it, and then r-click it and go back to properties of the folder, it still shows up as read-only again. As if nothing has changed.
How can this be... and what do I need to do to fix this.
Thanks in advance.

I assume your E drive is a cd rom or burner?? You cannot rename the folder on a cd rom ,not even sure you can do it on a cd-r , mayby if the cd has not been finalized? be more specific please

Sorry.
My HD partitioned into 3 drives.
C=win98 (800M)
D=winxp (2.55G used, 1.35G free)
E=storage (230M used, 4.63G free)
F=CDR
G=CD

Can you place files into the folder? Are they accessable?
It may be possible that the folder doesn't really exist. I had that once on a 2000 box where for some reason there was always a 'New Folder' folder in the root of the C:, but I came to find out that the folder didn't really exist, but the pointer to it did.
Never fully figured out how/why it happened. Somebody suggested that it got screwed up when the hard drive was defragmented, which is a possibility.

Yes, I can copy, move, delete files into the folder and subfolders within.
And I also can rename subfolders under this folder.
Strange...?
Could Microsoft make it any easier for me. Check that. I don't want there so-called help. Although winxp beats the heck out of win98.
Thanks again.

In Windows XP, a folder always has Read-Only attribute. That doesn't mean you can't rename or delete it. Sounds like one or more files in that folder are being open by applications. Make sure no files are in use (try rebooting) then rename the folder.

triet, that's what it was.
I was going thru moving the subfolders, when the message popped up telling me a file was in use. Rebooted... and Rename worked fine.Thanks for the help and info guys.
This Case Is Closed!
