Subject: Folder Permission - External DriveOS: Windows XP ProCPU/Ram: 1.8GHz/1024MBModel/Manufacturer: IBM/NetVista |
Comment: Okay, I have an external USB drive that is shared on the network. There are multiple shares on the drive and I would like for some of them to be only accessible by certain users. The PC's are all on a workgroup.

Reply: (edit)One normally opens microsoft shares to full read write. You then control access via ntfs permissions. "Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10

Reply: (edit)It'll be very difficult to set permissions if you're running in a Workgroup environment. You'll need to setup a local account for every user on the machine hosting the drive. Then, you'll have to set the permissions accordingly. Use Groups if you can. Just wondering though why you're relying on a USB drive to store the data. Why not just put a large HDD in the file server? That'd be much more reliable. Life's more painless for the brainless.

Reply: (edit)Okay, it shouldn't be an issue then. There are 2 PC's that need to have access to those 2 folders which should be private. All the other PC's should not have access to those folders. All the other folders are fair game. They're using USB for 2 reasons: 1: Portability, either one of them can bring the drive home and have access to their files. 2: We use an online backup service, it's much easier to have everything centralized.

Reply: (edit)Okay right, sorry it's what I meant. All the other users on different PC's who are not the user with the correct permission should not be able to access the folder on the drive if I create the 2 users on the 2 PC's. The rest of the PC's should not need to have the user accounts set up on their PC's as those two will never use another PC but their own.
