Expanded on my previous problem but this is a different game.
I looked into the registry a bit and discovered a possible cause of the problem.
On every other machine I've looked at the datatype of the defaulticon key is REG_EXPAND_SZ, while mine for some reason is just REG_SZ.
Will finding some way to change the type fix the problem?
The problem I had was my folder icons now show up as the standard file icon (for files without assosciated programs or extensions). All over windows.
Other programs like Winrar use the icon just fine =/
Cheers

Please - do not make multiple post about the same problem - add to your original post.
I see your original post was:
"The Folder icon is stuck as the default "File" icon (For files with no recognised extension). I tried switching but it just stays like that. How can I fix it?"
Both your posts are clear as mud.
The folder icon for what?
There are only a few types of icons for folders in XP. There are zillions of types of icons for files.Everyone has a few files that have the icon assigned to files with no recognised extension, and some files that are assigned the plain jane MS-Dos like icon, but most file types have their own assigned icon.
If most of your icons are fine, you shouldn't be messing with settings in your Registry.
When Windows assigns the icon assigned to files with no recognised extension, it's because Windows has no file association for that type of file.
If you know what program opens that type of file, RIGHT click on it, choose Open with, and either choose the program that opens it from the short list, or the longer list when you select Choose Program, or Browse (point Windows) to where the program that opens it is on your hard drive.
If you don't know what program opens a file with that extension, look it up on the web.

Just the general folder icon. User Created folders, directory folders.
Other details around this circumstance
1. Trying to change the folder icon by right clicking folder > Customise. Works for all BUT the 2 default folder icons.
2. In File Types. The two folder types have that default icon on. Attempting to change the File Folder type does the same as 1 (Although it invoked the search companion bug so that ain't it)
So basically, trying to find folders on my say.....desktop is extremely difficult as it's hard to distingish them from other files.
Shed anymore light on it?

Daedelous, If in Folder Options>File Types the Folder(s) icons show the proper default folder icon it's possible that the iconcache.db file is corrupted. To rebuild the iconcache.db file start your computer in SAFE mode then restart it in Normal mode. This may correct the problem.

Daedelous, Glad to see that the icon problem is fixed & Thanks for posting back to let us know.

Tufenuf, I did that when you said to start is safe mode then in normal mode.
My question is if I had to do something while I go into safe mode or just go into safe mode then normal mode and that should fix it?
Because I only went to safe mode then got out and started in normal mode and nothing happened.
Maybe I did something wrong.Angeliux
