I once read about a trick for something like this, but I've forgotten it now... I'll do some searching for it...

In the meantime, browse to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserAccountNameHere\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities

Then press the search button, and search for
*.dbx
All folders in Outlook Express are stored as .dbx files in one of the identities folders. If the search shows the folder still exists as a .dbx file, then that's the important part taken care of. Now, on to finding a way to get it to show up again...

Try this:
ControlPanel>Internet Options>General page
[Temporary Internet Files]
Delete cookies <YES
Delete files <YES (even offline content)

OE is part of Internet Explorer, and clearing the tempfiles cache sometimes does the trick (because of the index.dat files being refreshed - I think).

I'll get back to you on that possible trick...

Try this:
[create a new identity in OE, and] switch to it (a different one from the one you're using). Then exit OE. Restart it and switch back to your normal identity. Is the lost folder back?

I do know another trick that might force OE to rebuild the folder-structure, but it might be a bit more "dangerous". Give me some feedback first on whether the folder's already back or not...

You searched for *.dbx files, right?

It may still be there, for example:

1) You deleted it somehow > check the "deleted items" folder.

2) Your Logon-UserAccount has lost all its permissions on the LostFolder.dbx file, so you won't even see it in Explorer.
Let me know if you want me to give you complete instructions on how to change that, if you're not familiar with User-Permissions.

Just to make sure you searched from the right location:
- You found a bunch of .dbx files(inbox.dbx, outbox.dbx,...), but not the foldername.dbx one, right?

I'm assuming you have Windows XP PRO. That full guide is coming up, but I have to test that it works first...

**Make sure these are set like this before doing any searching:
ControlPanel>FolderOptions>View
- Show Hidden files & folders <YES
- Hide protected operating system files <NO

Oops - I was wrong! The permission-setting that hides it from even being seen, only applies to folders, not to individual files - sorry 'bout that. That means that you should be seeing the Lostfolder.dbx file when searching for it.
But maybe it is set for that folder...

Here's a trick to help you find out which folder should contain the LostFolder.dbx:
- Create a new folder, in the same OE account, and name it something unique, like "svgwashere".
- Copy an e-mail from another folder into the svgwashere folder. Then exit OE.
- There should now be an svgwashere.dbx in the same folder as the LostFolder.dbx file.
- Search for the svgwashere.dbx file on your computer, so you know which identity-folder it would have been in.

If you can find the svgwashere.dbx, then you know that permissions aren't causing this.

Here's that trick I was hesitant to share:
- Browse to the folder with svgwashere.dbx in it.
- Copy the .dbx files that you find there to another folder in case something goes wrong and you need to restore the originals
- After making those backups, delete the Folders.dbx file that's in the svgwashere.dbx folder
- Start up OE. Outlook Express should now rebuild the Folders.dbx file automatically and maybe -just a maybe- it will restore the LostFolder.

A last option...:
OE Menu: Tools>Options>Maintenance> Click on the 'Store Folder' button and check whether you hadn't selected a different folder to store the .dbx files in. If you had, you'll have to go searching for LostFolder.dbx in other folders on your HardDisk.

I'm out of longshots now...

Sorry to hear that...

If you had Norton Ghost or a similar program running, you could get it back, but there are also smaller programs that let you backup e-mails.
