floppy drive recognition

When I put a floppy into drive A, and go to My Computer to open it, the hourglass comes on for about 1-2 minutes, and then it says that I need to put a disk in drive A. Sometimes it says that My Computer is not responding. The Device Manager says that the drive is working properly. I rechecked the bios settings vs the motherboard manual and everything is correct. I don't know what to do next. The same identical thing is happening on my other computer with the same OS, P4 processor, 384mg ram.

Where did this floppy drive come from. Is it new, or have you taken it out of an old computer. Have you ever had it working?
