I have XP running quite well (after having a hard time with my vortex 2), I've got ATA100 going, my burner's fine, Nvidia win2000 drivers wekin', vortex2 2000 drivers werkin' and all is perfect. However I cannot access the floppy drive within XP. I can boot with a bootable floppy disk and use it and can access the drive in XP safe mode but it doesn't work when I'm logged into the OS. It always says the disk is not formatted (tried several disks) and asks me to format but will never even start the format. I shouldn't complain I suppose...I never really use it, just drivin' me a bit nuts....

I figured out the cause of my floppy drive problem. Here's what happened (just in case anybody runs into this same prob. Using the Win2000 Aureal Vortex 2 drivers screws up the floppy drive. Rolled back the drivers to winXP's standard set and the floppy started working again. It's too bad because win2000 drivers are much better. WinXP drivers make the sound really low. You can fix the low sound problem with AC97 utility (but I would still like this low sound prob. to be resolved without using additional software)

What is the AC97 utility? How do I use it to fix the Vortex 2 problem?

Would like to know about this AC97 utility also. I cannot access my floppy either. Everything is working fine in XP, it even sees the 3.5" drive, but when I access it, I get a message to format the disk.

My problem is this... I have my floppy drive hooked up correctly, and XP recognizes it, just like it has in everyone else's... my problem is whenever I try to move something to my floppy drive or format a disk I get an error saying "Unexpected I/O error" and sometimes I'll get an error saying "Windows detected an error that driver doesn't recognize" if anybody has and thoughts on the matter... PLEASE LET ME KNOW! Thanks

Ok... here's what the error says exactly...

"A:\ is not available

The floppy disk controller reported an error that is not recognized by the floppy disk driver"

I also tried the Boot Floppy Seek in Bios and that didn't work either... I'm completely dumbfounded by this problem... Hopefully someone out there can help me... Thanks!

I'm having the same problem. When I go to My computer, it doesn't even show the floppy drive. I use my floppy all the time, so I really need to figure out this problem. Any other ideas? I did a reformat and fresh install of XP and let it install its own drivers. It's not recognizing my modem either but I knew that was a common problem. I'm dumbfounded by this floppy problem!

My MX300(Aureal Drivers) Soundcard was jacking with my floppy under WinXP.

This link gets it all going great!

Good Luck.

I've just run into the same floppy controller problem when building a new XP system. I disconnected various components and tried 3 different floppy drives and ribbon cables to no avail. Other online research has found people as far back as August with the problem, but no posted solutions. Always it's either:

"A:\ is not available - The floppy disk controller reported an error that is not recognized by the floppy disk driver"

or the aformentioned condition of A: claiming every inserted populated diskette is unformatted and that it's unable to complete any attempted formats. I've had the Abit TH7-II Raid's onboard AC'97 modem and sound disabled in bios and never installed the drivers in favor of my DSL modem and Sound Blaster Audigy. Installing the latest Intel chipset drivers hasn't solved it, and there are no bios updates for the motherboard. I was worried the motherboard itself might be the culprit until I read your similar tales of woe. My next step is to try reinstalling XP and the chipset drivers with just the videocard, cd-rom, main hard drive, and floppy connected. Note that on my dual-boot to Win98 SE, the floppy doesn't work either. It believes no media to be inserted.
I have not yet tested the controller in Safe Mode on either OS, but I did test leaving a non-bootable diskette in the floppy while booting the system and confirmed the bios noticed it properly, not allowing me to boot to windows until it was removed. I have the floppy listed at the first device in boot order. I'll keep you apprised of my progress.

I have just set up a new XP system and cant get my floppy drive to work. When the system turns on, the light on the floppy drive stays solid green the whole time. It will not recognize disks and i cant boot off it in the start up. I have tried 2 different drives and 2 different cables, and no luck. And i'm sure the cable is on the right way. Anyone know how to fix this?

XP sees my floppy in my computer,
the drive light is allways on from ,
upon clicking the icon there is
a long delay then the INSERT DISK dialogue box that says
"please insert a disk into drive A".
At this point, everything else responds normaly to mouse clicks but,
5 second delays happen anyclicking on that dialogue box, even cancel.
I've modified the bios on my epox 8kh4+ and back with no luck.
Booting from it with a blank disk prevents boot untill I remove the disk.
I've unin and reinstalled the driver, no luck.
The troubleshooter claims that only 4 ide drives are allowable, is the floppy the fifth wheel?
Should the floppy appear in the disk management window?
I rarely use the bloody thing, but I want to make some kind of bullet proof duplicate of my OS drive
Norton Ghost, (or some other app if you know of a good one).
Am I doomed to a pricy usb floppy which I'll rarely use.
Please help
ken
