Comment:

My primary system is a Win XP laptop, but I also use a Win95 desktop(no USB) for basic WP duties. For several years I've used floppies to transfer files between systems and carry files with me--with no problems. Recently, the XP system(portable floppy drive) has been saying the disk is unformatted, saying it must be a MAC disk, but the Win 95 system can still read it.

1. Could this be due to a recent WinXP update?
2. Are there any utilities which might allow reading other format floppies on an XP system?
3. Can anyone suggest other solutions?

all the signs of a floppy drive out of calibration.

can the disks be read in a different system than your desktop/laptop?

If so replace the floppy drive in the laptop
If not replace the floppy drive in the pc

Consider using a usb stick instead.

Consider using a network of some kind to transfer files. That could be either a serial, parallel or some sort of ethernet connection.

Consider using a pcmcia to flash adapter or a pcmcia memory card.

As above the floppy in one or both are defective maybe.
