Hey, I hope this topic isn't breaking any of the Computing.net rules, so if a moderator thinks I am breaking the rules, then you private message me or leave a comment... but try to keep an open mind.
Okay, as you know, the XP Installer have two hinders:
1) Can't upgrade from Windows 3.1/95
2) Can't upgrade when booting off CD--only can upgrade from 98/Me if running Setup from within those OS'sDo any of you have experience with, or know how to "hack" (don't get the wrong idea!) the XP Installer so that it can upgrade from 3.1/95, and/or upgrade from a boot install? Like, for example, finding a way to bypass/ignore the compatibility check.
Why am I doing this? Solely for experimental purposes. That's all. Just for fun. Now you know why.
Thanks for your responses & thoughts - and again, hope I'm not breaking the rules, just try to keep an open mind...

As far as i know the XP upgrade feature is severely limited in this way. I dont think it can be hacked because the way it works is through your existing operating system (ie no o/s no upgrade option) The only way would be to write a new installer which i dont think the ppl at microsoft would like very much. I always just install clean and then use explorer to copy accross old settings and files. yes it takes an extra half hour but its better to have a clean windows install.

You can do it from another hard drive that has a pervious version installed on it. Like a friends or one from work. Just have it scan that drive just like you would the CD drive. It worked for me once.
