Ah yeah this is funny.Well I have Winodws XP installed on my C drive this was the first OS installed.Well today I got this bright idea to install Win2k also Well I forgot it wipes out the master boot recored and now I can't get on Windows XP at all.I loaded the XP cd to repair it and that didn't help..So what steps are needed to get Windows XP to load again? I don't feel like wiping the drive with XP I have alot of needed files on there.
Thanks.

Yes I can access the file but my problem is that Windows XP was installed first and then Windows 2000 So now when I start my PC and get to the boot section I choose Windows XP and it won't boot since Windows 2000 wiped the boot information. So I need to get it so I can boot Windows XP and Windows 2000

Boot from the XP CD and during Install choose the first REPAIR OPTION, this will take you to the REPAIR CONSOLE - NT COMMAND PROMPT and typing HELP then pressing enter will list valid command line syntax!

put in the xp cd, choose repair, and in the console type"fixmbr" enter.
i hate computers!
but cant help myself....

actually none of the recommendations will work.
The problem is with the W2K install the XP versions of ntldr and ntdetect were replaced by the W2K install.
You can either copy these files from someone elses XP install or run the XP Install Repair. This is where you run xp install and at the point of new vs repair install choose repair. You will have to redo your updates but your apps/data will be intact.
Next time just copy those two xp files to a folder then install W2K then restore the xp versions and you are done.

bootcfg nor any other utilities install the correct versions of ntldr or ntdetect.
The problem isn't the master boot record [w2k version will work with xp and visa versa] nor the boot.ini.
After all the system boots but only goes into W2K. W2k versions of ntldr and ntdetect.com can't boot xp which is why you need the xp versions of these files.

How to do a system repair.--Boot from the xp cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except the xp updates. Unless you have a slipstream sp1 cd you will have to d/l sp1 and all subsequent updates. You MUST have at least SP1 installed and the updates for security reasons. Be sure the firewall and A/V is active before going online as you will be susceptible to sasser and msblaster. If you don't want SP2 go to autopatcher.com and d/l SP1 and subsequent updates.
