Hi everyone. Just something I was wondering about just now. I'm sure this happens in most companies but I just wanted to know if there is a 'cure' for it.

My company currently works in a Workgroup environment. What happens is that the employees that is less skilled in IT tend to move files / folders to where they should not be. Is there anyway that you can set folders not to be moved anywhere?? In other words that it can't be dragged and dropped etc.???

Thanks

I'm not aware of it unless your company is using Windows XP Home edition. Assume that this is true, it's difficult to restrict files and folders directories because everyone is the administrator. Every company I serve uses XP Pro for better networking control with GPEDIT. Windows XP Home Edition do not have it.

Yes you are. We have a mix of XP Home and XP Pro. Will you be so kind as to explain more and why you make this assumption...Thanks

Hello jefton5

Please re-read my initial response. I revised it before I saw your followup post. Again, I have to stress that XP Home edition is never suitable for use in a business environment.

Just one more thing. Does that mean that this can be done if we use / upgrade to XP Pro? And if so, how? Meaning that files / folders will not able to be dragged and dropped etc. Thanks

1) Upgrade to Pro
2) Turn off simple file sharing
3) Set the file permissions to prevent deletion.

Hi Razor2.3

Thaks for your response. I don't know if I'm thinking the wrong way, but the problem is not them deleting the files. They accidentally 'move' (drag and drop) files / folders into other locations. I need to prevent them from 'moving' files, in other words 'setting files up to stay in a fixed location'...if that makes sense.

Not having them delete the files is helpful though and I'll definitely implement that. Thanks

What's a move, if not a copy and delete?

Make your requirements a condition of their continued employment -- resolved!

Could not resist. I am only half-joking, though. Not all is best resolved through complex technology.

You can make the files 'Read Only'.
Right click the file and select 'Properties'. Then select the 'read Only' box at the bottom of the page.

Also instruct them to use right click when dragging and dropping. Then they have to confirm if it's a copy or move.

Have you determined WHY "...the employees that is less skilled in IT tend to move files / folders to where they should not be..."???

Maybe you should. It might point you towards an easy, low-tech solution.

Is this a real scenario??

Hi- Thanks to everyone

Razor2.3 - Sometimes when they try and double-click a folder to open it they accidentaly drag it into another folder somehow. They don't actually delete it, they just drag it into another folder then I need to do search everytime to find where they moved it to and then move it back to it's original location. You can call it a 'copy and delete' seeing that it is copied to another location and deleted from its original location.

aegis - Does making the folders 'Read Only' mean they will still be able to modify the contents of the folders? I checked and all folders are already 'Read Only'.

justcuz - I think the problem why this is happening is that they use laptops and because of the mousepad. Meaning - when they doubleclick on folder its easy to drag something when you maybe move your finger while tapping. Do you think this could be a valid reason?

Thanks

No, I don't call it a copy and delete. Microsoft calls it a copy and delete. I actually know what I'm talking about, and I'm suggesting the only viable solution here.

(Guys, stop laughing. Please?)

Thanks very much. I didn't mean to offend or anything. It was just clarity for myself or to explain how I see it. I'm sure you're right and definitely know more than me that is why I am the one asking the questions.

By using your recommendation - Do I upgrade to Pro, turn off simple file sharig and then change the file permissions. From there on I just share the folders through shared network drives etc.?

Thanks mate. As said before I didn't mean to say that you're wrong or anything it's just for my understanding.

Oh, don't worry, you didn't. I just wanted to do a self-depreciating joke tonight, and it required me to come off as needlessly cocky.

But yeah, you got the idea.

Jefton5, sorry about that! I was wrong about 'Read Only'. On earlier systems it meant that you could not delete or modify the file, but for some reason it's doesn't work in WinXP.

But my other suggestion about insructing them to use the right mouse button to drag and drop is a pretty good one. Using the left mouse button will automatically select move depending upon the destination. Using the right button, you will get a drop down menu asking if you want to copy or move.
