Recently I've encountered a strange problem. My system (WindowsXP) would log in normally, the start up programs wouldn't launch, though. The modem wouldn't dial, because Windows XP couldn't find any modems installed in com ports. The sound wouldn't work either.
I tried to delete modem driver, but the system kept freezin any time I pressed "disable this device".
I ran Norton antivirus, and it didn't find any viruses.
I tried to launch Scan Disk, but it said I have to restart my machine first. It didn't lanch after that.I tried Windows XP installation CD, it didn't find any problems.
After that I decided to run Windows ME installation CD. During ScanDisk session, it reported that my autoexec.bat file was corrupted, and prompted to fix it. I agreed.
My system started functioning again.
Any comments??

thats why i use and love ME. it even fixes other OS's problems. now if i could just get it to destroy 98se.

I really don't see how fixing the AUTOEXEC.BAT file would get XP running again, especially since it doesn't even use it. I think scandisk must've found other errors on your drive and fixed them which allowed XP to run well again. You could have done the same thing from XP safe mode. Amateur indeed...
