So it all started with cyclic redundancy errors in certain files on a data non system partition. I ran chkdsk and let it do its thing. When it rebooted the partition gave the "Disk not formatted..." error. Then in my infinite wisdom I thought maybe If I resize the partition with pm8 because it could still see the partition. WRONG pm8 gave some cryptic error "access violation" and didn't do squat.

Data recovery is not out of the question but I'm wanting an easier way or should I say faster. I need to know if there are any easy to use tools to fix/recover a bad partition?

See if you can undo the PM operations. Running chkdsk without any switches just checks the disk. chkdsk/r will attempt to fix them.

What is the cause of the CRC in the first place? If you have an internal hard drive larger than 127GB installed in a system that is not 48 bit LBA compliant then I doubt you will recover anything.

At least I have not had any luck with this sort of issue. Running WinXP original on a large drive can also corrupt data.

There can be many reasons for CRC errors. Most of the time it is caused by hardware.

I mentioned one cause above. Others can include overclocking, defective HDrive, RAM, MBoard.

No matter the cause the cure is elusive.

Cyclic redundacy issues are usually caused by damaged files. Especially when downloading files...The files are damaged and thus are corrupted. To over come this issue is to start using a download manager.

Cyclic redundancy issues on drives are caused by failing drives or discs(CD/DVD/HDD)

In your case I think that you will need to use a recovery software program to try to rescue your data...as it seems to have lost its formatting....

To use the partition again use the disc manger program to reformat the partition

I guess I'm caught between a rock and a hard place with this one.

The crc errors are bound to just one file. It's a media file but it plays fine. I'm trying to copy it so I can back it up and that's when I get the error. I thought It may have been a bad sector that was maybe fixable and truth be told I always had problems with that partition ever since I accessed it from linux a while back.

PM8 didn't accomplish anything so there's nothing to undo. The reason I didn't want to do data recovery is because I'm short on space and it's like 30gb worth of data I have to back up. Read, it's gonna take a long time. I'm almost certain it's a partition error because the data recovery software I ran recognized all my files.

Thanks for the insight and in case i find any solutions I'll keep the forum posted.

Try a live version of Linux, like Knoppix. May or may not help but is worth a try.
