I use Zone Alarm Pro 4.0 and it has blocked well over 600,000 intrusions ( WOW )

Not kidding

Here is the Zone Alarm site

I like sygate personall firewall pro. I've hear alot of good things about zonealarm. If you want, run them both at the same time. They don't use that many system resources and then you have double protection.

Check out http:www.pcflank.com/ or http://www/wilders.org/ for firewall recommendations. If you are trying them start with Sygate, it is a very comprehensive and easy to use firewall and easy to uninstall, Kerio uses the least amount of resources, but it is a bit more difficult to use as you set the rules, Outpost by Aginitum just released a new version that does everything, Zone Alarm is the most popular firewall it is easy to use, but it can be hard to remove should you not like it. DO NOT USE TWO FIREWALLS AT THE SAME TIME. Every company advises against it. All these firewalls are free.

I use zone alarm pro...excellent firewall ...BUT make sure you DISABLE the firewall in XP. XP has it's own firewall and is not good because you cant see outgoing traffic which is just as important as seeing incomming. XP firewall WILL conflict with the other firewalls.
good luck

I have used Norton Firewall for the past 4 years (getting a newer version each year). Was happy with Norton Firewall until this years version. 2003 for me has had some issues with other spyware programs, although I have a partition on this computer. One nice feature that is offered in this years version than others is: popup blocker, ad blocker, and a very nice detailed insight of who may hack you with all their info.

I have heard some good things about zone alarm and may try it out once my subscription ends early next year.

I use the NETDefense firewall on my XP machine and have not had anyp roblems with it.

However I have not disabled the firewall that comes with XP because well, I did not know it existed. Could this be the cause of some of the weird system failure errors I get?

I dont know why you are getting system failures...check the event logs in admin tools. Go to control panel> admin tools> event viewer> then there are 3 choices on left...check system, there will be a huge list, click on one of the errors and go to properties. It will tell you about the error...hard to understand but there is link in the box that pops up. Takes you to Microsoft's report of that error and possible reason you get it.
As for the XP firewall...it is not enabled by default but to check to see if it is...go to start> control panel> Network connections> click on your connection> under network tasks click " change settings of this connection"> click on advanced tab under internet connection firewall, UNCHECK "protect my computer and network...." ok your way out. If it's already unchecked then you are only running your net defence. Here is the link in case you can't follow what i said about firewall.

hope it helps
