If I go to YouTube with Firefox 3 (any version, including 3.1 beta), either none of the thumbnails appear or just a few of them. This problem is all over Google with no fix. It seemed to come along when I moved from Firefox 3.0.1 to 3.0.3 but putting 3.0.1 back doesn't help.
I have found out that once this has happened then the same problem will also occur when using IE7.
I have also found that the problem arises only when running Firefox "first after booting" (or CCleaner with Firefox invoked). If I run IE first then all is OK (both browsers), until I reboot.
My rather unsatisfactory work-around is therefore to keep clear of anything to do with Firefox after booting, until I have been on-line once with IE.
I never imagined that IE would have such magical powers!Armed with the above information can anyone think of any pointers please 'cos it's got me nicely stumped?

I've now found that my workaround wasn't so brilliant either.
I was testing using the same website each time. It seems like this is a condition for the browsers to behave themselves, as given above.
As Firefox is just another program, I'm finding it hard to see how it is linked with IE or its webpages. Unless Firefox uses some common files or other?

I am 3.0.4 and do not seem to have the problem.
Are you using any add-on with FF which might block images?
Have you checked your Options under to allow images to be loaded?
You did not state if you had done the above.

Try creating a fresh, clean Firefox profile devoid of add-ons to see if it works in it:

I only have Adblock. I had already disabled this and rebooted but the problem remained.Leroi
I will have a look in detail at both your suggestions. I have hitherto kept my profile during uninstall/re-install. I had already checked for blocked websites but in any event "sometimes (rarely)" the thumbnails all appear.I have now found something else about this. If I turn off the firewall in my router then the problems all but vanish. I might get the odd thumbnail that is missing but refreshing the page fixes it. I'm not sure what, if anything, can be set into the firewall.
Thanks for your ideas guys - I'll keep you updated.

Have tried everything, still the same.
Looks like I must check out the Router Firewall. Comments welcome but it might be better to raise this aspect as a new issue if I can't sort it out.
Thx all

I emailed Belkin about the router and they were quite helpful. Among other things they pointed me to a later firmware update than was given on the router setup webpage. Unfortunately the situation remained the same. I've about disabled all background tasks (including virus checkers and firewalls) but the problem remains.
It is very odd because our Vista laptop works fine on the same websites using wireless on the same router. In fact my XP is on a wired connection so it is particularly surprising that I have to switch the router firewall off to view YouTube thumbnails when using Firefox.
The other strange thing (which I've seen reported elsewhere) is that Firefox and IE seem to affect each other in respect of this problem. If Firefox is playing up then this can cause IE to play up, and if IE is OK then Firefox will be OK for a while. On clearing the TIF caches it is Firefox that immediately gives the problem.
I think its time to put this to bed for a while, because if I always use IE for YouTube the problem never arises. Alternatively I can temporarily shut off the router firewall (having first invoked a software alternative).
I can only imagine there is some confliction or other but how the heck this affects the router firewall is a total mystery. Maybe the situation will change with some update to Firefox, YouTube, or the router.
Maybe some of the above will act as a lead to others expriencing this problem.

I've at last deduced a way to fix this problem:
Go to Firefox and type about:config in the address line.
Discard the warnings but take care not to accidentally click
anywhere on the page or you will change some setting.Go down to this entry:
network.http.max-connections
Right click it and lower the figure from the default of 30 to 10.
Reboot the system at least once.
You may wish to experiment with the exact figure but in my case I
can't get away with much more.I don't know why this problem was affected by the router firewall but
I suppose it is possible that 30 connections was seen as an attack.I would be pleased to hear from anyone else who has fixed the
problem using my suggested method.some other bloke...
