Mozilla firefox tried to update itself so as usual I let it do it's thing. For some reason it got stuck in a endless cycle of failing to install over and over. Driving me nuts I killed it in Task Manager.

I tried to start firefox only to see, missing nspr4.dll. AHHHH So I open up IE and find that file online, and replace it only to get another error.

At this time I try to Remove firefox and cannot. I download and try to reinstall and recive " cannot open output file "

I try to do a system restore and now that too will not work. Every restore point I go to only leads me to restore has failed! No changes have been made.

Computer still working fine but now I am stuck with IE, And cannot uninstall, reinstall, remove, or even use firefox!

All I was doing was browsing the web and when it asked to restore since I wasn't busy I just let er do it's thing.

Any suggestions as to what to do next?

Take a look at the tastmanager running processes and make sure, that firefox isn't runnig.
Install firefox and see what happens.

Well I already tried all that with out success.

But I posted here too soon after doing some quick research I found a cure.

http://groups.google.com/group/mozi...

but to give you the info if you don't want to go there,

Go here, http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloa...

Download and run the program.

If it detects any rootkits let AVG fix it. Just to be on the safe side I looked them up first and found I had some nasties on here that were hidden.

If you don't get any rootkits detected then check for other things with an antivirus.

It worked for me as firefox is fine now 2.0.0.9

Hope this helps others too.

Thanks for the above... I have had a few issues too with Firefox lately. Specifically it would offer to update itself and then fail to do so - usually some issue re' one or more files etc.; advises to close all apps etc - and then try again. Whatever approach it would fail. Then suddenly it appearedto go in OK?

Now it's offering yet another upgrade... Not sure if I'm wanting to go there - just yet.

Hope this is not going to be a regular/frequent issue with Firefox; thus far it has been a pretty good/viable etc. alternative to IE?

Here is my solution: I fetched version 1.5.0.2 by FTP and installed it. That went fine and I upgraded to 1.5.0.12 ( maybe not necessary). Went ok too.
Then I did a regular XP uninstall.
Then I FTPed 2.0.0.0 and installed. That was successful too.
However, then I upgraded to 2.0.0.10. That one gave me the original problem again. I even could not do a regular XP uninstall. So I deleted the Mozilla Firefox folder. Re-installed 1.5.0.2, and uninstalled again. Then tried 2.0.0.9: No go however. But 2.0.0.0 was successful. So now I stick to that one.

Hi:

I recently had problems with getting Firefox to complete an auto-update... Kept telling me to close all programmes etc... yet it still failed.

Downloaded whole fresh pacakage/latest version and still it failed that way too.

Posted a query here and "mountain" suggested to boot to safe-mode and install that way.

Worked like a charm; so obvious a path to try too... (but sumtymes one duzn't c the obvious)

Perhaps try safe-mode in your situation?
