Finding the OS Folder

Ref. windows xp home "c" primary partition
Ref. windows 2000 server "e" logical drive

Hi
I have all files and folders unhidden/visible, including the OS. I can not
locate the subject folders (in windows or winnt folders)
when I look in explorer or using search. What am I doing
wrong! Thanks
PS what would you name the "search" if you where going to conduct it?
