Hi,
does anyone know how to find e-mails and e-mail adresses in outlook express? My computer got on fire (the power) and that somehow destroyed my Win XP pro installation and it is not possible to repair it. I have a new harddrive with Win XP pro and I can access the old drive and even read my documents and use some small applications, but not any integrated with windows. Is it possible to find the e-mail-files and adresses and save them? Please help. Is there any "computer-expert" out there who knows how to repair windows on one drive from another?

It's possible...just went through it myself...

ONLY DO THIS IF YOU'RE AT LEAST A LITTLE COMPUTER SAVVY! If you're not have someone else do it for ya. =>D

First things first, open up my computer, go to tools, folder options, and then on the view tab click "Show hidden files and folders".

Install your other drive or access it somehow, and go into:

E(or whatever drive it'll be):\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME/USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{7F0C58A0-8C8A-4AF5-AEF7-A04857CB3099(THIS NUMBER VARIES}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\

...then...copy inbox.dbx and sent items.dbx to the same folder on your new drive under your new username. It'll be like:

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR NEW NAME/USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{7F0C58A0-8C8A-4AF5-AEF7-A04857CB3099(THIS NUMBER VARIES}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\

It will warn you about overwriting your new files...and just say yes...unless you have new emails that you need.

That should be all...your address book (unless previously updated manually) will update upon scanning the messages when you open it.

Now here's the lame part...if you had other folders that you created (more than inbox and sent items), you'll have to create the exact same folder name in outlook express...then close outlook express...and import it using the method above.

Your other option is using dbxtract, a program that (VERY unreliably) extracts messages from a dbx file. But I'd go with the first if you have the know how.

Good luck. Post again and tell us if it worked!

Thanks Benn for trying to help me. Unfortunately there is nothing in the {7F0C58A0-8C8A-4AF5-AEF7-A04857CB3099-folder on any of the drives. Which is strange because I have e-mails in my inbox on the new drive. There isn't even a folder named microsoft. Maybe outlook express saves files in another location in Win XP pro?
I will keep on trying to find my e-mails.
I appreciate any help.

OE6 stores address books as .wab files in:
"X:\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book"

You can import them in Outlook by going to file, import, and then address book.

Hope this works for ya.
