I just reformatted my hard drive to get rid of a virus. Now I am trying to locate some favicons in my temporary internet files. Right now, they are showing up in my favorites, but I know they will disappear eventually if I don't save them to disk and assign them to the shortcut. I cannot find most of them. Is there anywhere else on the computer they might be? I have only been able to locate 2 of about 10 favicons I have come across so far when browsing.

I'm lost here. What's a "favicon?"

It's a small, graphical icons used by IE to identify a specific website in your favorites folder.

Gotcha. I don't think they'll disappear. You can just go into the Properties of each favorite and change the icon to whatever you want...

If the Favicons are currently showing in Favorites - then..

IE Properties - General Tab - Temp.Int.Files Section - Settings Button - View Files..

Scroll down to find the Favicon(s) - then - Drag the Favicon onto the Desktop and then do what you will with it

Lesley, that's the problem. I can't find them in the temp. internet files, view files. I can only find 2 of them. There "should" be about 10 more of them. Is there any where else they could be on the computer? They are showing up in the Favorites.

Favicons are .ico files. Search the temporary internet folder for this extension. When found, copy them to a more permanent location.

dcogsof4, What you really need is "FavOrg". you can read about it at the link below but you can't download it for Free as you must be a paid up member.

FavOrg Program explained

You can download "FavOrg 1.2" for Free at the link below. It's in the right column under "PC Magazine Utilities". It will work with all versions of Windows & Internet Explorer.

dcogsof4,

Also note that you haven't set IE to empty the TIF each time you close the broswer. If you have, the are no favicons to find.

tufenuf, I already have favorg, but it's version 1.4, instead of 1.2. I didn't think 1.2 was compatible with XP, so found a link about a yr. or so ago, where I could get the 1.4 free. I used to use version 1.2 and it always worked right. I have 1.4 saved to disk. I have noticed that version 1.4 will only work the first time you use it. After that, you have to assign the icon through the program. Do you think maybe I should uninstall the 1.4 and try the 1.2?

I just did a search of the temp. int. files for .ico and only found the 2 I had already found. Weird.....

No, I'm not letting IE empty the folder on exit. I am also not deleting them manually.

For anyone interested in this thread, you can download FavOrg version 1.4 from Kellys-Korner page HERE.. Scroll down the Registry Edits for Windows XP Tweaks & Tips page for FavOrg - Restore and Save Favorite Icons. Left click on it.

I was just doing a search for favorg, when I came across this:

There is a link near the bottom of the thread that has a download link for another program that works like favorg and these folks think it works better. I downloaded it and will try it later.

I am running the program now and it works GREAT. It gets all those favicons that favorg misses.
