I just installed the beta version of Microsoft AntiSpyware and it works just fine. The only prompt I'm getting is every time I connect to the internet the AntiSpyware asks me about findfast.exe. I believe it's connected to my Office 97. Is this spyware? Do I need this findfast.exe? If not, how do I remove it from XP?

I saw a previous thread about findfast.exe from 2003 and it said it could be removed using the control panel's add/remove. I looked there and cannot see where I can uninstall findfast.exe. Any advice?

i beleive you can remove it from your registry and that should take care of your issue...office95 you used to be able to remove it from startup, but this time it is in the registry
Start > Run > regedit press enter
highlight my computer and press ctrl + F and then search the registry for findfast.exe remove any instance of it starting up, or any instance of it at all and then see what happens, you may need to remove the executable from your machine period before it gets fixed...make sure as always
BACKUP REGISTRY BEFORE DOING ANY REMOVAL

It should be a control panel icon, not in add/remove. http://www.geek.com/tipstrix/misc/findfast.htm

Per,
You are absolutely correct! I looked in the control panel and found the icon. Thank you!!!

So, it won't cause me any problems if I choose to delete/uninstall it?

Okay, when I "open" findfast.exe in the control panel, I have these options:

Create Index
Update Index
Delete Index
Update Interval

Show Indexer Log
Pause Indexing

Close
Close and Stop

What should I do to disable/delete/uninstall this program?

Thank you! I followed the instructions, but I have one question ...

I went to start + programs and found the findfast shortcut, but when I clicked delete it said this didn't uninstall findfast.exe - to do that I needed to use the add/remove program. When I go to add/remove and select Office 97 and click it asks me to put in the CD. Now, should I do that and try to uninstall findfast, or should I just delete the icon in my programs? Which would be the best decision?

I don't think I'll ever need to use findfast, but on the other hand I don't want to do something that will cause me errors that will waste time trying to fix. ;)

Is simply deleting the "indices" and clicking "close and stop" enought to disable it?

After reading the MS link I think you should run the Office 97 setup from the cd and uninstall find fast. It askes for this ,I assume, to clean the registry entries and the associated DLL's.

Thanks, Per. I'll do that. I'm happy to say that just deleting the "indices" and clicking "close and stop" has stopped the popup from the antispyware program, but I think I will completely uninstall findfast.exe just the same. ;)
