Someone gave me a DVD (data DVD) containing various mp3 files, which I want to copy onto my hard drive, but some of the names have slashes "/" in them and Windows won't import them. And I can't rename them on the DVD-R. How can I import these files? Thanks.

dakotajoe, "/" is one of the reserved characters which are banned from appearing in a filename to avoid confusion. Can you open the file on DVD and copy it? Alter the filename and save manually to your machine? HTH. Ed in Texas.

Hi, thanks for your response. I have tried every way I know how to copy and paste or click/drag or rip the files, but Windows refuses to help. And since it is on a DVD-R, I can't rename the file on the disc either. I had thought that there might be a 3rd party utility program of some sort that could help, since there is so much file sharing between PC and MAC these days.

Well, the Command Prompt does have a copy & rename command: copy "<DVD Drive>:\<Path & file name of file>" "c:\<New name>"
I'm not sure how Command Prompt will react to the original file name, though.

the disk obviously has been created with a different OS (e.g. MAC OS)
there is NO way for you copy this file of the disk with a windows PC. ask the person who made the disk to rename the files in a decent manner that can be read by decent operating systems :)

Well, in theory, you COULD do it. NTFS allows any Unicode character, save Null. The character limitations are enforced by the Win32 API. So, you just need to use something that doesn't use said API. Like Windows Services for UNIX. Actually, I don't know if WSfU uses the Win32 API or not, but I've heard it doesn't.
