After running defrag, I get quite a long list of files that can't be defragged. It seems like I have read somewhere that there is a utility that defrags better than the windows defrag. Does anyone know about this?
Also, I looked up some of the files it said cannot be defragged; there are a lot in Documents and Settings\Suzi\Local settings\ and under other users as well. In each there are several folders, one is temporary internet files. Is it safe to delete these? Apparently they are not deleted by the disk clean up utility. I ran the clean up before defragging.
It seems like each time I run defrag, the list is longer of files that cannot be defragged.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

In Windows Safe-Mode, no drivers or programs are
running, and Defrag is better done.Hold down F8 during boot.

This seems to be 'normal' - if it really bothers you then Defrag in Safe Mode - it will remove some from the list but not allMaybe someone will give an explanation as to why this is 'normal'
The Windows Defrag is a 'watered down' version of DiskKeeper

I found the website for ordering DiskKeeper. It looks good. Has anyone here used it? Does it use much system resources or slow down other applications?
Thanks,
Suzi

this is normal. don t waste your money on any additional software that might even slow your pc down. instead after defragmenting click ok and then defragment again immediately. now you'll find that all the files have been defragmented :)

DO NOT DELETE any of the files in the documents and settings folder unless you r sure as these contain all info about the individual users who log on to ur pc and other windows settings

I had the same problem, and being determined to defrag my drive, I immediately ran defrag again. The new list was much smaller, but I still didn't feel satisfied, so I ran defrag a third time. This resulted in a really small list of about 3 or 4 items. I didn't go any further, as this was satisfactory to me. The second and third defrags were much faster that the initial one.

This is true Margaret, the more one defrags the less time it takes because it continues to keep those scattered files snug together for quick access. Suzi, 'Diskeeper' is a very good program to use. I found out about it from the 'TechTV', it's highly recogmended there. You should use the 'set it and forget it' feature as I have, then you won't have to worry about defragging manually or setting a schedual, it detects automatically when the drive needs defragging and then goes to work. :)
