Hi folks.

I recently begun having an intermittent problem where I will double click a file, and will get an hourglass for about 10 seconds before the file opens.

This happens independent of file type/size/location/etc.

And there seems to be no consistency to when it happens. I can open 10 files fine, then one opens slow, then back to normal. Or three bad ones in a row, then fine for a while. Kinda weird.

Tried several solutions mentioned here -- disabled LMHOSTS lookup and NetBIOS over TCP/IP, checked for virii/spyware, disabled indexing.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

There are any number of processes that run in the background and may cause the symptom you describe. Press CTRL/ALT/DEL and bring up taskmanager. Have your processes list in view and then test opening various other things. Try to see what processes are using up your ram/cpu when the delays happen then research what those processes relate to and see if you need it/them to run.

That was a good idea, but I don't see any unusual spikes in usage when the problem occurs.

And if I watch the CPU Usage History graph, there's no unusual spike there either.

Hmph. Was a good idea though.

Well...after tearing my hair out for a few weeks I, uh, finally realized that file indexing was turned on.

Now, the thing is, I know it was off previously. So, is there some software I installed that turned it on without my permission. Or just XP decided it probably knew better than me and I must want it on?

Who the fork knows?
