Strange problem so any input anyone can add will be much appreciated. Compaq 1Ghz Athlon, 128MB RAM, 25 GB HD, Geforce 256 vidcard, Creative Soundblaster. 1 CDRW drive, 1 DVD drive. Trying to install WinXP Pro. So I restart the machine booting from the CD drive with XP in it. Setup starts, goes through the format, copies all the files. After it gets through the part where it says installing devices, the screen pops up to enter your key code. Enter the key code and hit next starts to proceed and then all the sudden a window pops up and says, need such and such a file off the XP CD. WTF? The CD is in the drive. In the dropdown for Browse, there is not CD drive to choose, only the A and C drive. I can hit cancel to skip the missing files, but then another prompt appears saying another files is missing. So I stopped the install and restart the whole process this time using a different CD drive. Well got to the same prompt, so this time I hit cancel to skip through all the files it was missing. A total of 3 all together. WinXP Pro install finished and restarted the machine. I never get anything, just a black screen that sits there. So on my 3rd attempt, I tried different things like using different memory, and removing all addin cards that are not necessary. Still the same issue. So I tired Win2k Pro, same issue occured. During the install, a prompt appears saying it needs files off the CD even though the CD is in the drive. I've used these same CDs before on other systems with no problems. What could be causing this? Motherboard? Cables? Anyone ever had this happen to them? Finally, my one thought was maybe I could copy all the install files for XP to the HD and do and XP install from the HD just like the good old days of Win98 and the options cabs folder. Will this work? Anyone installed XP from the HD? Thanks in advance!! |
