Hi,
I was up a couple of nights ago installing some dodgy software... when I realised some files had just disappeared into thin air! The files missing included:
- All Quicklaunch icons
- Most items and shortcuts on the Desktop
- About 70GB worth of music and applications. What's funny about this is that all of the folders are still there - so if I go into my Music folder, I can see 800 subfolders but not ONE file!
Unfortunately my backup isn't very current, so I wanted to see if I could restore the files somehow.
What I've tried so far:
1) Rebooted, just in case it was a fluke and would go away.
2) Shut down the computer and restarted.
3) Bought McAfee Security Suite, installed it, updated it and did a scan of the hard drive - nothing found!
4) Did a "error-check" through Windows Tools. The error-check finished without incident.
5) Installed "freeundelete". It couldn't find any of the missing data. So, does anyone have any suggestions? Are all file restore programs the same or are some better than others? WHERE DID MY DATA GO??
Um... thanks for any suggestions.

Try Microsoft's System Restore which is already on your computer.
Restore to an earlier date and see if
files are returned.

ralphzulli, I hardly ever restart my computer so I don't think that's a good idea. Besides at least now I know precisely what's missing - if I restored to three weeks ago there will be all sorts of things different.
Per - this program works! I can see most of the missing files! Only thing is, there are literally tens of thousands of files to restore, and the user interface isn't that friendly. Is there another program out there that can restore to the original folder, and that can have multiple files selected? Of course if it's free that's a big plus...
Thanks again,
WASSIM

Did you check the dates listed under System Restore? It amazed me to find that sometimes you can restore to the day before. Just installing new software or opening certain files sometimes causes a restore point. I would certainly check what dates are listed.
