Ok, yes, I did do a search but nothing helps! I must have been lucky before with this home networking thing. I have a desktop and a laptop, both with XP home. I had a desktop which I just gave to a friend with which I had no problem setting up a home network. Now I have a SWEET new desktop and I can share the internet connection through the laptop, but not files or printers. Isn't that weird? The laptop is connected wirelessly, the desktop is connected through a router, and they share the DSL connection beautifully. I ran the network setup wizard on the laptop and it went fine. I tried to run the wizard on the desktop and keep getting errors. I created a setup disk on the laptop and ran it on the desktop and still got errors.
I tried checking "other" for my configuration and it didn't like that either. I still get errors and it tells me to configure the network manually.
How does one do this?
Waaahhh! I don't understand how it can share the network connections but not the files, folders, and printers.
Any advice appreciated!

I forgot to mention that the laptop is a Sony VAIO with wireless built-in (Centrino) technology.

..and I also forgot to mention that I have enabled file sharing on the desktop and laptop and printer sharing on the desktop and laptop (I have a small photo printer connected to the laptop).
The laptop can see its own files as "Network Places" but cannot see the desktop's files. The desktop can't see its own files as "Network Places" nor can it see the laptop's files.
HELP!

First make sure that the laptop and desktop are in the SAME workgroup and they both have different names. Then try to run the network setup wizard again.

Do you know how to ping a computer? If so, try to ping the laptop to see if your getting communication between the two. If not then lets wait and see if the network setup wizard works and then I will explain how to ping and how to get your IP address and so on and so on.

Thanks for replying "m;" but aren't the computers "pinging" each other since they share the DSL connection?
And my DSL connection is set to obtain IP and DNS addresses automatically. I just feel like I am missing something very simple, but don't know what it is!
WAAAHHH!

Ok, so here is the error log from the Network setup wizard attempt on the laptop:
**********
Network Setup Wizard Log
Attempting to set computer name
Old computer name is the same as new computer name - not setting.
Setting server description (comment): desktop
Attempting to set workgroup name
Workgroup name is the same as the old one - not setting.
Will attempt to share public connection.
Will attempt to firewall public connection.
ICS Failed to Share Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC #2 as a Public connection.
Adapter Configuration for Home Networking failed.
Shared Printer: hp photosmart 1315 series
Shared Printer: hp LaserJet 1000 DOS
Shared Printer: hp LaserJet 1000
***********************
So I changed the name of the workgroup and the names of each computer. Still I can't setup the network wizard on the desktop.
Oh, BTW I made sure I am logged in to both computers with the same username.
WAAHHH!!
Well, at least now the desktop can see its own files as "shared."
Hmm..any ideas????

Have you turned off simple file sharing?

Also, did you rename the network connections when you set up the desktop

I did both those things, nothing worked!
Actually, I found a solution to my problem. I updated the firmware on my router (LinkSys WRT54G) and that solved it!
YAY! ME!
So for anyone having a similar problem, try that. I was also thinking about getting the latest drivers for my network card. :^)
