I have files in
C:\...\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\E5BSXGZI>and about 6 other similar folders that won't delete. The filename is too long (starts with reference_blahblahblah).
I'm on NTFS partition.
I've tried: command prompt deleting, and directory deleting. Safe Mode. Renaming at the prompt/safe mode also. CHKDSK, then trying to delete in safe mode. When I right click it comes up with an odd menu, and delete, rename and more aren't even on it.
I'm not sure what else I can do to get rid of these files, as I suspect they are some sort of info relayer to either a site or MS...so I would like to keep them off my comp.

Try opening a command prompt, once opened press ctrl+alt+delete to bring up task manager, close down EXPLORER.exe in processes, now try deleting the files in the command prompt. Once you are finished, bring up task manager again, goto file and run new task, type EXPLORER.exe and enter.
Hope it works for you...........

Thats the folders that contains the temporary internet files.
Restart in safe mode and delete them. Do not start Internet Explorer before deleting or they will be locked.
If you still can't delete them, try using Total Commander (s/w). It works for me.Nigel

Delete "Unremovable" File
Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open. Close all open programs. Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.exe Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe. Leave Task Manager open. Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory the undeletable file is located in. At the command prompt type DEL where is the file you wish to delete. Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.exe to restart the GUI shell. Close Task Manager.http://rogier.xszone.nl/windows/wintricks.html
• Delete undeletable files
1) Close all open programs.
2) Open a Command Prompt window.
3) Close Explorer.exe from the task manager (ctrl-shift-esc), leave Task Manager open.
4) Navigate to the folder with the undeletable file(s) in the command prompt window with the cd command.
5) Delete the file with del filename.ext
6) Reopen explorer.exe from the taskmanager.-----------------------

MoveOnBoot - move or delete files on next reboot
MoveOnBoot allows you to copiy, moves or delete files on the next system boot. This comes in very handy, if you need to replace or delete files which are locked by other applications, loaded into memory or cannot be changed until next system boot. You could manually enter a line to the wininit files, but using MoveOnBoot is much simpler, since the program can be integrated into shell - it creates the "Copy/Move/Delete on boot" context menu item.
