Comment:

I have a .bmp file that was downloaded with grokster that will not delete...I have tried deleting it from dos, at start-up, by waiting for 30 seconds before I try to delete it, by using "file pulverizer" (a third party program)
I continually get either a "file wont delete" or "file not found" message.
the file is 20K in size and has a *very* long name (I dont know if this matters with XP or not... I remember hearing something about problems with files that have long names a few years ago)
Any suggestions?

Did you uninstall Grokster or delete the files?

Some info here here:

Hope it helps.

There are a few things you can do here. One is that previous person's posting of "rename it than delete it" Also there could be a coupkle things causing it, the main possibility being another program may have a hold of the file thus the file is in use and won't delete. Ctrl+Alt+Delete and one by one remove all the programs running in the background (not Explorer.exe) and then try to delete it. Another thing is a registry reference hold on the file. NO don't fiddle with the registry, it could take forever to locate the right key and you can mess things up badly, try a program called Regclean free from http://www.jv16.org/
run that, look for references to that file or search specifically for them, and remove the file and all references to it in Regclean.
I am fairly confident this will pull it (and all traces of it) off your system.
Post back how you make out.

Boot into Safe Mode, click Start, Run, Command, and cd into the folder the file is in. You can get the short DOS name by typing dir/x in the folder the file is in.
Type attrib -s shortfilename where shortfilename is the name of the file shown by dir/x command. This turns off the system attribute that may have been set which would prevent deletion.
Type del shortfilename to delete the file.
Type exit to return to Windows.

try this it worked for me!
Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open. Close all open programs.

Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.exe

Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe. Leave Task Manager open.

Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory the AVI (or other undeletable file) is located in.

At the command prompt type DEL where is the file you wish to delete.

Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.exe to restart the GUI shell.

Close Task Manager.

good luck!

regards....riz
