Just bought a new laptop. I want to tranfer some old files from my old computer to the new laptop. Heres what I did. Connected the two machines through an ethernet port cable computer to computer. What happened? Both machines said the cable was disconnected, it clearly was connected. Tested the ports and cables in other sources, they are fine. What am I doing wrong?

That is a straight through cable. You need to use a crossover cable or 'laplink cable'.

... is it crossover cable? Some NICs may 'autonegotiate' to allow the use of 'straight' cable... and some might not.

Speaking of autonegotiating NIC it looks good on paper but it does not alway work.

Yeah - it's more 'something I'd heard' than actually tried. Before I got my D-Link hub, I put a lot of miles on my trusty crossover cable (now semi-retired)

Ah, so, might need different cables. OK then. Heres a follow up. What if it were between the laptops WI-FI and another USB Wireless stick? Or are those things just for Internet?

If you have the capacity for WI-FI and another USB Wireless stick then you should be able to set it up so both computer see each other. This is peer to peer connection which can be done with a cable or wireless.

However you still need to set this up. If you have not do a search on the subject or look at the instruction that came with the WI-FI and another USB Wireless stick.
