Hi. I just got a new computer and I have a question. My old one (both computers have win xp home) when you created a new file, it did not have the file extention in the name. For example, on my old one, i would right click the desktop and click new text document. One would pop up the desktop named "new text document" Now on my new computer, it says "new text document.txt" i cant get rid of the ".txt" becuase then the file doesnt work. is there a way to get rid of it? I want it to work like my old computer, with out the file extention in the name. Thanks for helping

Go into folder options, you can choose to hide or unhide extensions for known file types in there.
I agree; computing.net does need an edit button.

If you want to name a file without any extension, XP will be very upset and do something bad to revenge you. XP prefers that each file have extension for better folder and file management.

Under the file options in folder properties, always show file extention is unchecked. How come my old computer doesnt show it?
