I’m in the process of going through my stacks and stacks of CD’s that I used for backups and condensing them down to 1 set which will go onto my 2 external hard drives for backups. I’ve run into something with regard to managing different sets of the same data that I wonder if you’ve ever encountered. I have a folder called “My Pictures” that I keep all the digital pics in, separated by names of people. I have several sets of this folder on different CD’s with varying dates. I want to create 1 master folder, overwriting the duplicates while adding files that may not exist on prior sets.

Let’s say I’m using Windows Explorer for this task. If I move a new file or folder, it goes into the destination without problem. If the file or folder already exists, I get a message asking me if I want to overwrite. I make that decision largely based on which file is newer, wanting to overwrite the older with the new one. However, many of the files are exact copies, meaning I have to answer the question “yes, I want to overwrite” about 100 times more than I want to. I’d like to receive the message asking me if I want to overwrite only when the file sizes, dates, or times are different. Have you ever seen a way to do this?

I use a program called ACDSee to manage pictures and it’s actually very good since it shows you the picture and asks if you want to overwrite, rename, delete, etc. However, it doesn’t have a feature like I’m describing. I can select overwrite on duplicate but it only checks the file name for duplication. In other words, it would be possible that while the names are the same the file sizes, dates, and times could be different and I could overwrite a newer file with an older version.

If you’ve got any thoughts on this I’d be interested in hearing them. TIA.
