Most Of My Desktop Shortcuts Have Changed From Being Regular And Working To .ink Files And NOT Working Can Someone Help ?

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/reg...
copy the content of this page into a notepad, save it as linkfilerestore.reg and run it.
Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

Wero85, There's also a "LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix" available at the link below which is a zip file. Download the ZIP and open it. Extract the REG file to your hard disk and double click it. Answer yes to the import prompt.

Wero85, Download it like any other download and save it to where ever you want My Documents or Desktop, etc. then just open or extract it to the same place then double click on the .reg file to merge the contents into your registry then reboot your computer.
Tufenuf

Wero85, Try right clicking that .reg file and choose "merge". Did you get any error message when you double clicked that .reg file?
Tufenuf

I Dont See A "merge" Option When I Right Click On It, Well, Not Really An Error Messsage Just That It Cannot Run It.

Wero85, Do the following:
Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.exe and press Enter.
Once Regedit is open click on File>Import and locate that reg file you saved, hilite it and click Open. See if this corrects your original problem.Tufenuf

It Says the It Has Been Sucsessfully Entered Into The Registry, But Nothing Has Changed, Do I Need To Restart ? ?

"Do I Need To Restart ? ?"
Yes, restart your computer and see if the problem is corrected.

Ok, well some of the icons on the desktop now work but not all of them. such as my yahoo mail shortcut and aome chortcuts to other folders.

Wero85, Well it looks like some progress has been made. Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and download the "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" reg fix to somewhere you can easily find it.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_...
After you do the above,
Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.exe and press Enter.
Once Regedit is open click on File>Import and locate that reg file you just downloaded & saved, hilite it and click Open.
Restart your computer.Tufenuf

Wero85, Glad to see that the problem is fixed as to "But Why Did It Happend In The First Place ?" it's really hard to say. It could have been a recent program you downloaded & installed, it could be that some malware crept into your system, etc., etc. Whatever it was it messed up your file associations and hopefully all is AOK now.

"But Why Did It Happend In The First Place ?"
........"Beware of Lavasoft Ad-watch, it is solely responsible for this problem." Needless to say. Had you really taken out the initiative to actually review all the links supplied for your aid - you would have known.
Good luck!

Wero85, As Sabertooth stated ........"Beware of Lavasoft Ad-watch, it is solely responsible for this problem." Go thru the links st the search link below and you'll find others who have had the same problem with Ad-watch and how to correct it.

Ok, Well I Removed Lavasoft But I Am Still Getting A Black Screen (Before I Have To Enter My Password) With A Box In The Middle Of It And At The Top Of The Box Inside Of The Blue Bar It Says Diffrent Words Each Time I Restart My Computer, Any Idea Why ?

"Ad-watch... is solely responsible for this problem."
Is that definitive?
The consensus from the experienced contributers (not the seething masses) appears to be:Ad-Watch is doing precisely as you have instructed it to do
Regardless, it's not necessary to remove Ad-aware, merely turn off Ad-watch

No, it isn't necessary to turn off Ad-Watch and "Ad-watch... is NOT solely responsible for this problem". It is your computer and you need to take responsibility for what happens with it.
When using the "Lock executable file associations" setting in Ad-Watch, it is necessary to turn off (deselect)the Automatic setting. Otherwise, just as quoted from my writeup above, Ad-Watch will do just as instructed and automatically block any changes to the executable file associations.
Locking executable file associations is fine if it is malware attempting to do its dirty deed but it is not pretty when an intentional software install goes bad as in Wero85's case (and countless others I have helped with this problem). I have that setting checked, however, Automatic is turned off. That means that I get extra prompts when installing software and need to allow the changes.
Note: If Ad-Watch is turned off with the Automatic setting, before allowing it to run you must turn off the Automatic setting and be prepared by accept the prompts from Ad-Watch. Otherwise, expect to go through the entire operation again to restore the file associations.

Sure - my concern was that I keep seeing Ad-watch blamed for this problem by otherwise sensible contributers here at Computing.Net
While a poor understanding of the Ad-watch settings may contribute to a delay in affecting registry repairs for the '.lnk' problem, it seems shortsighted to lay the blame upon Ad-watch, particularly for an issue that predates it
I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter
