(see Response 3 and 4)

Another Post says
Kelly's fix worked! It didnt work in normal mode, so I switched to safe mode with command prompt and typed in "regedit -s "C:\path of the file\linkrestore.reg" and it worked.

I guess you should leave out the quote that is at the front end of this
regedit -s "C:\path of the file\linkrestore.reg"

then for
C:\path of the file
you would substitute
C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe

Then I guess you are able to get into the Registry, so you can do the items shown when you
click line 12 on the left side here at Kelleys
Korner--- http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_...

The path is where you saved the file...

Did you try the two links I gave you?

regedit -s "C:\path of the file\linkrestore.reg"

then for
C:\path of the file
you would substitute
C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe

The whole thing would look like this

regedit -s"C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe\linkrestore.reg"

There is a space after regedit.

Sweetladyrose, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_...

If you can't run the file do the following:

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.exe and press Enter. Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.

Sweetladyrose, Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.

If you have the import Registry file open you need to locate that reg file fix that you downloaded, click it to hilite it than click the Open button on the bottom right. You may have to use that drop down arrow button the the right of the narrow Look in: window at the top.

Sweetladyrose, If you downloaded the exefix.reg from the kellys site that I mentioned in Response No 10 what happens if you double left click it? It should merge the contents into the registry.

Rosie, One last thing you could try is a System Restore to the closest date prior to when this problem started. See if you can follow the instructions at the link below.

No that did not help...Tufenuf let me ask you one more question just before my file extentions changed from EXE to LNK, I was fixing another problem that was wrong and another poster on different site had me go to my Registry Editor and add System and click full control...and when I restated my system that is when my extentions changed. Do you think that could have caused my problem?

Rosie, What happens if you try what I posted in Response Number 18 ? Maybe if you go back to that site where someone had you edit the refistry that person would be able to have you undo what is messed up. It's difficult for us to recommend anything since we don't know the details of what was edited in the registry. I wish I had a better answer but I'm afraid I don't. If you could only do a System Restore to the closest date prior to this mess it probably would correct the problem.

Sweetladyrose,
I find that some of my given information is wrong.

If the REG file is saved on your Desktop, then in 'Safe-Mode with Command Prompt' you would do

regedit -s "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop\exefix.reg"

Where username denotes your User Account configured on the computer.
------------------
Also in Tufenuf's Response # 10,
he says to click on line 12.
I find everytime I do that, another page comes up with a bunch of reg edits.
Also found that I have to right click line 12,
then click "Save Link Target as...".
Then I get the download of exefix.reg

If D drive is a CD or DVD drive I think they will not work in Safe-Mode. Safe-Mode uses minimal drivers and Services to run.

You should transfer the file to your Desktop while in Normal Windows, then go into
'Safe-Mode with Command Prompt' and do

regedit -s "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop\exefix.reg"

Where username denotes your User Account configured on the computer.

Can anyone tell me what that message means and what I can do so the file exefix can be imported. :)
