Comment:
I have a laptop which crashes intermittently - I get a message 'FAT32 file check files for consistency'. Can anyone tell me how to do this? I am a novice so not too technical please!

That would be the WORST thing to do at this point. If you have a file allocation problem converting to ntfs will TOAST your machine.
Go to Start and select Run. Type cmd and hit enter. This will bring you to a black box with a command line. Type chkdsk /f and hit enter. Answer yes to the question of check the disk at next boot. Type exit and hit enter. You are back to the desktop. Shutdown and reboot. Chkdsk will run.
Report back if there are error messages.
Once chkdsk has corrected any disk discrepancies the next step is defrag your drive. Start, all programs, accessories, system tools and defragmentation. If it says you don't need to defrag, defrag anyway.

You're right, wanderer. My response was kinda "knee-jerk",wasn't it? :-( I really wasn't suggesting he do so immediately, although it seemed that way.
If your suggestions clear things up,then he should follow mine.
