File and thumbnail names disappeared.

Specs: Windows XP Pro
W XP Pro SP3. Clicked Start>Documents and a list came up, as usual. I clicked "My Documents" here and a page with the folders and thumbnails came up. I believe they were all labeld, naming the content of each. I deleted a couple duplicate items and did something that deleted the label names on all the folders and thumbnails. The folders and thumbnails are still there and open fine, but the name of each folder or thumbnail is gone. The only way to know what is in each, without opening it, is to put the cursor over the item. Then a yellow box comes up showing what is in the folder or thumbnail.

I went back to the desktop and clicked Start>Documents and chose "My Pictures" from the menu. All the thumbnails came up and they are all labeled correctly.

Is there a way to get the folder and thumbnail names back to the "My Documets" items?

The "Name" column has been reduced in width to an extent that it "disappears" from view.

There is a simpler way to recover a more 'correct' view, but for clarity's sake, let's go this long route:

• With "my Documents" open, click View
• Click Choose details...
• With "Name" highlighted, type in 200 in the "Width of selected column (in pixels)|__|"
• Click OK
• The "Name" column should now be visible, ready to customize to your liking.

Not sure what is meant by "name column". There never was a name column. Beneath each folder or thumbnail view was the name. For instance, one folder was labled "Books" just beneath it. Now the folder is still there, but the name is gone. If I move the cursor over the folder icon, a yellow box appears which shows the nam, size of file, etc.

Instead of just looking at the screen and seeing the name of each folder or thumbnail, I have to move the cursor over each one unitl I find the one I want.

After opening your Documents folder click View> Details> Choose details. Check the name box in the list of details to show.

Sorry, I always (wrongly) assume people are working in Details view at all times (as I do) and using non-default settings in Folder Options...

Go to "My Pictures" and jot down all the settings under View and do the same with Tools | Folder Options (both General and View tabs).

Apply the same settings to "My Documents", remembering to click the button labelled: Apply to All Folders in Tools | Folder Options... | View(tab).

*** Another way, but less likely to succeed, is to
Restore previous folder windows at logon
again in Tools | Folder Options...|View(tab)

Addendum: It almost seems as though your labels.names are the same color as the background???

Only thing I haven't already tried is "Restore previous folder windows at logon. " All the settings under View and Tools are the same for both My Documents and My Pictures.

It's puzzling because everything was fine until I deleted a couple duplicate items. I created a new folder and there was space below it for a name. I entered a name, but when I clicked a blank are of the sceen to finish the new folder, the folder remained but the name disappeared. Guess I'll have to use Details.

Why not just rename the icons? Can't be that many. Right click on the icon and choose rename.
