Hi All,
1.What is the purpose of Fdisk?

2.Is it best to boot & format my XP HD using win ME boot disk or WIn98 boot disk?

I mean is one bootdisk better the other?
Thanks

Use the Win XP cd to format and re-install Win XP, that is the best way of doing it...

You don't need both, you can partition and format your disk from the XP disc, during the installation (XP) process.

The main difference between 98 & Me fdisk is that 98 is limited to about 63GB; Me good up to about 130GB.

Hello.

Neither Win98 nor WinME has the ability to partition HDD greater than 32 GB and neither can format HDD with NTFS file system. They use FAT and FAT32.

Therefore, your best bet is to use WinXP CD to partition and format the disk.

Besides WinXP CD has the newer NTFS version on it, namely NTFS 5.1 version to my knowledge.

Hello, Mechanix2Go

Thanks for the info but MS Knowledge Base article does not mention about partitioning and formatting the HDD greater than 32 GB. It just says fdisk.exe in Win 98 does not see HDD greater than 64 GB. This is different from what I am saying, isn't it ?

Not really (so much for reading comprehension)

Win98 "out of the box" can work with drives up to 64Gb - for larger drives (up to 137 GB) you'd use the WinME fdisk or use the patch for Win98 (as per the link)

Hello.

Everybody cannot be elegant however eagerly he wants to be because elegance is a very difficult thing to learn and behave especially if it is not in you.

Good day.
