Ok, it all started when I was uninstalling my hp scanjet 6300c because I couldn't get it to initialize then later it could not be found in the device manager.

I went to the add/del and I swear that I clicked on that folder to delete it. I then got a message that there wasn't any folder to delete or something close to it, but there were components or files that could be deleted, so I said OK. The next thing I saw that it was deleting the hp psc officejet 3.0. But, the hp scanjet 6300c was still listed there.

When it finished uninstalling I decided to do a system restore which worked fine. But, I now have this popup that is telling me (The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK or try again) This won't work for me. Then it goes on to say (or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package "Fax.msi" in the box below)

In this box that is below reads (c:\hp\\tmp\aio\setup\fax\Fax.msi or it has a box to browse. If I click on the box path below it also has a path that reads the number "1". I have no idea where I should even browse to.

When I Click OK or try again, I get this error 1706. No valid source could be found for product. The path c:\hp\\tmp\aio\setup\fax\Fax.msi cannot be found. Verify you have access to this location and try again or try to find the installation package "Fax.msi" in a folder from which you can install the product Fax.

I have no idea where it is supose to go and I should have access to this location cause I am the administrator, but don't know much of anything on this stuff.

Then I read a post some where else and went into the add/remove program and into the add remove windows components and removed the fax. I never use this anyway and thought that would make this problem go away, but it didn't.

Now I can't even shut down the computer and restart to finish the removal of the fax component as long as this Fax.msi popup box is there.

I usually shut down my computer when I'm finished with it to keep my grandchild of cause of it being password protected. I don't have sleep mode enabled cause there was a conflict with my wireless mouse, so now it has to stay on.

I will try to do a hard shutdown with the button for tonight. Why do these things happen when it is bedtime? I am so mad and frustrated.

This is an HP Pavilion 2002 Windows XP Media Center Eddition and is only about 6 months old.

I'm not ignorant, I just need more learning!

1)I need to do a defrag and I was wondering if it is possible do run while this c:\hp\\tmp\aio\setup\fax\Fax.msi notice is on my screen?

2)I was wondering also in the msconfig if I select "Normal Startup" if this might open up a path that this thing is looking for? The only thing I have unchecked in startup:

a)Sticky note, which was a trial version and I deleted it about 4 days ago before the trial was up, but is still listed in the startup.
b)pagekeeper jobs, part of hp scanjet 6300c
c)fptool, was my old dialup but now I use DSL

I just got the same problem. The thing is that you can stop the fax installation in the task manager. to do this just right click in the taskbar, click on applications, select fax, and click on end task and the installation is stop, however, when u turn restart the pc, it comes back again. i have tried all and nothing has worked out yet.

Thank you so much. I wonder why no one else told me this?

I will try this right now and try to do the defrag.

I got this problem solved with that c:\hp\\tmp\aio\setup\fax\Fax.msi.

Go to the HP site http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/solutions.html then type in "gr_uninst.exe" without the quotes, in the search box on the top of the page.

Then click on the All-in-One Software Removal Utility (gr_uninst.exe) and download it to your desktop.

Open it and it will give you two install options. I used the first option.

Then after it installs there will be an icon on your desktop that says gr_uninst.exe. Just double click on it and run it. You will have to restart your computer after it is ran.

After you restart your computer this problem file will reappear, but the uninstall will want to access the internet. Let it access the internet. The problem file should dissapear after this. You are finished and it should be gone.

You can delete that downloaded gr_uninst.exe file now.
