Just got this pc and trying to install my WinFax Pro 10 and a prog off the net. Both of them totally lock the pc up just after you put your area code in the box. (I know, faxing is old school, but a lot of businesses still use it, and having a fax at home is handy at times)
Could it be the modem? It's just a cheapie generic model and the progs do recognize and go the the query with no hitch. I have a stinking feeling it may be the dual core processor choking on an old prog. Funny thing here is that this is a very powerful machine for a non-gamer and I feel I should have no problems whatsoever with things like this. Any ideas would help, but this won't be the end of the world if I can't get a fax going on this pc, just an 'oh well, drat it' and a trip to the local fax place in the future. Creekstar

Just an old man fiddling on a computer.

My experience with this is that there becomes a conflict if you use cable or broadband as your regular internet connection and try to use the phone modem installed through a PCI connection.... The best fix for this is to use a USB connected phone modem instead!

Just to add my experience to what posted by lurkswithin...

I succesfully operate with no problems an internal cheap PCI fax modem while connected by optical broadband to internet via an ethernet NIC.

Obviously the signal is splitted by the line termination into a stream feeding the NIC and the voice band to the phone. This second is shared among the fax card and the phone set. I use the Windows XP home builtin fax application that works raw but perfectly.
