i'm getting this exact message right after the xp screen; safe mode, sf/md w/ command prompt, nor last known good configuration works, but here is the message:
STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The session manager initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x000026c. (0x00000000 0x00000000)
The system has been shut down.What is this? oh yeah its a blue screen, (the blue screen of death)

Have you tried going to safe mode(F8), press during POST, to uninstall any new software/patches prior to this happening? Also, just read SP2 can be the cause(From M$ site). From safe mode you can scan PC for bugs and do a system restore.
Hope this helpsThe world is full of willing people, some are willing to work, others are willing to let them; just a thought!

OK, have you tried repairing the master boot record or replacing the system files from your recovery disk?
You should have the option Replacing files or to do a complete format/reinstall.

If you used Disk Administrator / Tools / Assign Drive Letter to remove the drive letter assignment from the system drive, you will likely experience:
STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Session Manager Initialization system process terminated
unexpectedly with a status of 0xC000003a (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has shutdown.To recover from your temporary insanity, you can NOT select Last Known Good. If you have a current ERD or repair folder, you can replace the System hive, either by running the repair process or using tip 505. If your repair information is not current, use Off-line Registry editing to load the original System Hive and select the Disk Key. In the right hand pane, select the Information, type REG_BINARY, value name and empy the value. Select your oldsystem key and unload the hive.
Shutdown and restart your original installation.
