Hi,
I have made a partition through Partiton Magic 8.0 for Linux OS (ext2 Format).
Then I've choose 'Install Other OS' option
in Partition Magic. I've select a Linux OS.
It told me to restart the system. When i restarted my system Windows boot scrreen
apeared and then on another screen it showed me error : 'Windows unable to perform chkdsk'
after 2 seconds, blue screen apeared and displayed Fatal Error. I tried to boot from Windows Installation CD to fix it up but unable to boot from CD(Though I've choosed CD drive as a first boot device in BIOS).
I treid to run in safe mode, in command prompt mode but all efforts in vein. My Linux
OS is working in another partiton. But unable to boot in Windows XP.Please help me 'cause i don't want to loose my important data.

How many hard drives do you have and where are these XP and Linux partitions on them?
"...on another screen it showed me error : 'Windows unable to perform chkdsk'
after 2 seconds, blue screen apeared and displayed Fatal Error....."Are you getting any further info you haven't told us of - such as something revealed by clicking on Details, or an error message number, or a stop message number?
Why is it trying to run chkdsk? Did you not shut down XP properly the last time you used it?
If you can think of no such reason, your hard drive(s) may be defective.
Check your hard drive(s) with the manufacturer's diagnostics.
See the latter part of response 1 in this:
http://www.computing.net/windows95/...
If you don't have a floppy drive, you can get a CD image diagnostic utility from most hard drive manufacturer's web sites, but obviously you would need to make a burned CD, preferably a CD-R for best compatibilty, on another computer if you need to.The mbr (master boot record) that XP depends on , probably the one on the hard drive the XP Windows (main) partition is on, has probably been modified such that XP doesn't "know" how to deal with it properly.
You can probably fix that by using the fixmbr command at the Recovery Console screen (boot with the XP CD, let it load the initial bunch of files, press R at the first screen where it asks you if you want to Repair Windows to go to the Recovery Console, etc.) but you must be able to boot from the XP CD."I tried to boot from Windows Installation CD to fix it up but unable to boot from CD(Though I've choosed CD drive as a first boot device in BIOS)."
You should be able to boot from the XP CD in any case.
A CD drive has to be before a hard drive in the boot order in the bios Setup in order for you to be able to boot from a bootable CD in it in any case, but it doesn't have to be first in the boot order - in fact if you also have a floppy drive, the floppy drive should be first in the boot order, because a bootable floppy will not be recognized if the floppy drive is listed after a CD drive. If you can set the boot order to floppy drive first (if you have one), CD drive second, hard drive third, you usually don't need to change the boot order after that - it will work for all situations (ignoring USB bootable drives).
If there is nothing wrong with the CD drive you have the bootable CD in, you should see a message along the lines of "Press any key to boot from the CD" or similar early in the boot sequence. You then have a few seconds to press a key to boot from the CD.
If you see no such message....
- if you have more than one optical (CD or DVD) drive, some bioses will only recognize a bootable CD in the first one detected by the bios, or the first one in a list of detected optical drives in the bios - try the CD in the other optical drive in that case.
- your laser lens(es) may be dirty - try using a laser lens cleaning CD in the drive
- your optical drive may be defective - try another optical drive.
- if your XP CD is a copy, if it is on other than a CD-R disk it may not be recognized as being bootable properly, especially if it was made in a drive other than the one you are trying to boot from.
......Partition Magic 8.0 has lots of bugs. There is a free upgrade available for it on the Symantec web site.
