M:\I386\asms. The parameters is incorrect.
Fatal error.
one of the componets that windows needs to continue the set up could not be installed.

I tried this numerous times and get the same error message. I tried this as a clean install also and received the same.

Any assistance will be greatly appreceiated.

if your using a burnt copy, you have a corrupt file
http://members.tripod.com/qwert183/Controls.man
replace the controls.man file with the one you can download at the url above, copy the whole xp cd to a folder, then burn it again with the
new controls.man file.
for similar errors and solutions see;

Two methods to try .

Boot without cd rom support .
From the A prompt > fdisk , reboot & format c:
Then from the A prompt > fdisk /mbr
Or,
format c:
Then from the A prompt > fdisk /mbr

Reboot with cd rom support using W98 boot disk with emm386 & smartdrv on .
Execute SMARTDrive by typing smartdrv from the A prompt .
It will only take a couple of seconds to load.

Type drive:, and then press ENTER (where drive is the drive that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM).

Type cd\i386 and then press ENTER . ( hit R if unable to load )
Type winnt and then press ENTER .
Windows XP Setup starts .
Type the path to the Windows XP installation files , and then press ENTER . For example , type d:\i386 ( may already be there )

Setup will then begin copying all of the Windows XP system files to your machine , which can take quite a while ( hours if smartdrv has'nt engaged )

Note : Always press Enter or hit the space bar to try again , for any can't copy messages .

If XP will not install .
Try using a different HAL, when set up says to press F6 for third party drivers, press F5 and choose Standard PC for the type of computer .

If the above HAL fails , more here .

THe reason why you are getting this error is because you did not make ur cd bootable. It can't read certain files on the cd because it's not in the correct directory. To resolve this error, all u have to do is copy everything that's on ur cd to the computer's desktop, and then run the upgrade from there.
