Just finsihed my computer, and something caught my curiosity. I have a 120GB HDD, when partitioned and formatted, I have 3 in FAT32 and 1 in NTFS. I use the NTFS partition for storage, is this an OK setup? This is my first time using NTFS, the only reason why I did was becaus eon initial setup, I lost 43GB and disk management would only let me format to NTFs, probably becaue of BIOS. All help is appreicated, thanks

You have to put your operating system on a ntfs partition because fat 32 won't see ntfs. You cannot made a partition bigger than 32 gig in fat 32. So the way you want to do is a no.

Unless you are going to dual boot, I can think of no reason not to go NTFS all the way. There is no down side I know of, and several reasons to do NTFS. Partition Magic will change the cluster size so you can get back a lot of HD space.

FAT33 supports partitions up to 2 Terabytes. XP's formatter will only format FAT32 partitions up to 32 Gigabytes; if you use a third-party formatting utility to format a larger partition with FAT32, however, XP has no problems using it.

You shouldn't have any problems with the way it's setup now. One downside is that it is slightly more difficult to recover files off a ntfs drive in dos than it is on a fat32 drive. Personally I would use ntfs for the entire drive.
One benefit of ntfs is that it supports file sizes larger then four gigs. Not a big deal to most users but can be very important if you edit video.

WRONG!!! I have fat32 as my primary drive C: 40 gigs, D: is NTFS and is used for automatic backups only, its 40 gigs also! and I have a USB 40 gig external that is fat32 also I use to transfer data from Desktop to Laptop. Works fine! And don't be fooled, XP can see either FAT or NTFS!
Here is the difference! FAT32 is 32 bit NTFS is 64 bit. NTFS is faster and takes less space to store the same file FAT32 does. I chose FAT32 for my C: drive because I'm just more familar with it and it is a bit more backward compatible. WIN2000 or XP both are written to handle 32 bit as well as 64 bit code... Stick a floppy in either and see what it uses to format! :-)

You are absolutely correct blue02 I just convert one of my drive into ntfs and I can see it in xp.I apolozige for the mistake.

FAT32 alone is not limited to 32Gb. However according to the article in the link below when using WinXP on a FAT32 file system it is limited to 32Gb.
