Is there a way to add FAT32 to the partition options under control panel - admin tools - computer management - disk management. I would like to partition a external hard disc in FAT32 before formatting it on a seperate PC running Windows 98SE. I have a backup program for XP that works but is very fussy and formatting in XP puts a system file on which it hates, 98SE just formats. At the moment I have to fdisk and format under 98SE.

Fat32 IS a option unless you have a drive larger than 32gigs at which point you have passed the MS code limit on fat32 and will only be presented with ntfs.

This is by design by MS and there is no hack I am aware of to counter this.

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

You don't partition in fat32 or ntfs, you partition and then format in fat32 or ntfs. XP will not format a partition in fat32 larger than 32 gigs.
I would use the software that came with the external hard drive.

Sure there is...simply don't use M$ software to format the HDD. Use the HDD manufacturer's software & you can format a FAT32 partiton as large as you like. Not only that, but you can customize the cluster size.

M$ deliberately created the false limit of 32GB to 'force' people to use NTFS when formatting using the XP CD. NTFS just so happens to be M$'s proprietary file system...hmmm. Unless you expect to have files larger than 4GB, I suggest you stick with FAT32 for your ext HDD

Well said Jam. I agree with the suggestion to use FAT32 whenever you do not have a 4GB file problem.

I formatted a 184 gb partition [internal] using Fat32 IN XP !!!!

It does give you a choice at least for internal HDD's which is in the Format menu

Also the same HD was re-partitioned using WinMe Fdisk and formatted with Win98...and so on for all my partitions. I have no problems with XP in FAT32

Limit ? What limit?

What program were you using to format a 184 GB partition, Fat32 in XP? I don't think it was XP's disk management or right clicking the drive in explorer and selecting format. If it was I would like to see a screen shot of that option cause I have dealt with several XP systems and have not been given that option. No one says you can't use a larger Fat32 partition in XP they are just saying it won't format a larger drive, Fat32, with it's native tools.

You cannot format a volume larger than 32 gigabytes (GB) in size by using the FAT32 file system. Windows XP can mount and support FAT32 volumes larger than 32 GB (subject to the other limits), but you cannot create a FAT32 volume larger than 32 GB by using the Format tool or Windows XP Setup..

I'm sure I did it using the Explorer right-click Format but funny thing, the Fat32 option is not there now but it is on the smaller drives.

I know I did it in FAT32 because that HD [200 GB] was never done in NTFS [I hated it] and I'm positive I did it first in XP but that was over 2 years ago. I never use Disc Managers either [hate them too] and have never done any partitioning or formatting from the CD.

I can't explain nor prove I did it but now I'm wondering if I really did [red-faced mode] as one tends to format things so often and perhaps my imagination has got the better of me and maybe it's time, after 9 years here, to depart with my tail between my legs for giving a gross mis-informative opinion, albeit unintentional.

I'm still sure I did it in XP [I think]

The only thing I can think of is that because it is now formatted by the WinMe Fdisk, XP which sees the FAT32 partition refuses to let me format again in FAT32 [not that I'm planning too at the moment].

Now I'm clutching at straws and still red-faced. Credibility shot down in flames...and I'm so young too.

I guess I have to admit that I was wrong

At some point we all are, you, me and everyone else on this site. It's not everyone that would admit it like you did. To this I say good job, that's better than the majority of people would be. I learn something new everyday about computers, it's a learning process, don't beat yourself up over it.
