Comment:

I've just signed up for broadband internet (600k) access with ntl. They've hooked up a cable modem to my pc via my network card.
The trouble is that my downloads still struggle along at about 6kb/s.
Is this normal?!?!?
Is there anything I can do to speed this up?

Try this fix...And no that is not normal!

Right Click My Computer go to properties
Open Device Manager
Drop down to ports com and lpt
Highlight Com 1 and go to properties
Now click the top port settings tab

Most of you will see the settings for Win98 at the default setting of 9600 bits per second.

Bits Per Second .....Put to the Highest setting

win98 should be 921600 and xp 126000 anyways put to the highest setting.

Now go to bottom Flow Control...Change to Hardware

Next go to advanced make sure both the bars are all the way to the highest settings.

Click ok. Then click ok again.

Repeat the above steps for com2 if you have one.

Your lpt port leave as is.

Reboot and watch your downloads and browser fly! You should also get much better pings .

Hope this helps....If not contact your cable company

Hey Robbie, that has absolutely nothing to do with boadband. Geezus! What spwells need to correctly set is MTU, MSS and the TCP Receive window (RWIN) values to get optimum download speed. The text you posted concerns internal port speeds which have NOTHING to do with broadband. Geezus!

Sorry but your wrong...

Windows uses the COM port to transfer data back and forth between your computer and your modem.

I have been using this for years and it does make a difference.

Geez to you too!

So how do I change the MTU, MSS and the TCP Receive window (RWIN) settings then? I'll try anything and everything! :)

Cheers

This all has to be done by tweaking the registry or using tools that tweak them for you.

Here is good place to start.

However you should be getting much higher downloads that you posted before using these tweaks.

Try resetting your cable modem.

Check speedguide.net or dslreports.com etc

rwin and mtu, mss can help but they can mess you up if you dont know what you are doing. I say try the simple things first. You say you just signed up. MAke sure they did not miss something. I have DSL and we have to use filters on our lines. Without them they make things worse. Cable is different but it could be as simple as that. Maybe the line or existing line is bad etc. Give them a call at least cause 6kb is 56k and that is garbage.

Good luck

I can't see how the com ports have anything to do with this. He clearly stated that he is using a cable via NIC.

I'd start with the cable company tech support before doing any reg hacks. Remember that you share the cable with everybody else on your run, is it slow all the time or just during peak times when everybody is online? Try different sites to download stuff, it could be just the place your downloading from.
