Today, Bill Veghte, M$ Senior Vice President, Online Services & Windows Business Group, cemented the death sentence for XP on June 30th. Read his letter below.
An Update on the Windows Roadmap

The feller who owns the computer shop around the road from me has a stockpile of oem versions of Win XP Pro.
He sells more custom built computers with Win XP installed on them than Vista...
Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity...

"One of the key investments we made in Windows Vista was to create a comprehensive "telemetry system" that lets us gather anonymous information about how real customers are using Windows Vista"
Hmmm.

"One of the key investments we made in Windows Vista was to create a comprehensive "telemetry system" that lets us gather anonymous information about how real customers are using Windows Vista"
That could be read as:
One of the key investments we made in Windows Vista was to create a deeply-embedded "spyware system" that lets us gather anonymous information about how real customers are using Windows Vista
That's the way it sounds to me.
Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

I still use Windows 2000 along with Xp.
I'll upgrade to Vista the day I turn straight.

Medion MIM 2080
Toshiba T2130CT
Macintosh Performa 450All working wonderfully.

All of My clients want or run Windows XP Computers. I build them custom and install Win XP. Also there is a Shop close to me who will sell OEM XP until they run out, but he told me they stockpiled a lot.
Also If Microsoft would go to the HP Desktop and Notebook Forums 90% of the posters are asking for Downgrade drivers for Windows XP. So even though by sales it looks like a lot of people are running Vista, think again. It is just the opposite.
They buy the computers and go back to XP!!

Re: Post 4:
I guess the comprehensive "telemetry system" also lets M$ perform anonymous WGA license check that may or may not toggle the Reduced Functionality Mode switch built into Vista ...

Death sentence? XP will still be supported for another 6 years. OEM copies? There should be plenty of used retail copies available as people decomission old PCs.
I am forced to use Vista on my company laptop, but use XP on my company desktop and all my home computers (sans server). As much as I am disappointed with Vista I don't really expect to be using XP for another 6 years.
Well before MS stops suporting XP, laack of support from hardware and software vendors will most likely necessitate an upgrade. Personally I am "hopefull" of good things for Windows 7. Just as ME was a stepping stone to XP, I am hoping Vista will be the stepping stone to Windows 7.
Or maybe MS will decide to finally cross totally over to the dark side and enslave us all.

Umm, where've you been for the past 15 or so years?.....

W2K: no support; no upgrade; no activation BS
Not broke; no fix required
pretty simple stuff

@ Derek,
"I am as likely to use WinXP as I was to use WinME: Not happening. Somewhere, there has to be a limit on how much trash you are willing to put up with -- ME\XP is that line for me." -- The Doofus
Talk about living up to one's name ... LOL!

Yeah, couldn't resist that piece of history, which makes an interesting read alongside your signature link and the early Vista posts.
some other bloke...

"So there is no reason not to choose the best version of Windows, which is Windows Vista."
I thought they said Windows XP was the best version of Windows. In the Windows XP Tour that comes with the OS, the narrator says "Experience the best, experience Windows XP." I guess in 2 years (or will that be 6?) they'll be saying that Windows 7 is the best. I can't believe their word because they keep changing it.
"So even though by sales it looks like a lot of people are running Vista, think again. It is just the opposite.
They buy the computers and go back to XP!!"
Exactly!
