Fan Cycling With Video Slowdown??

Specs: Windows XP, Pentium 3.20 Hz, 2.00 GB RAM
I have a 5 y/o Dell Dimension E510 desktop running XP (up to date) running with a Pentium 3.20 and 2.00 GB of RAM. Lately, I've noticed that the fan cycles up and down in it's speed and that it seems to occur when a new page has just been displayed on the screen - the more complex the screen (colors or detail) the faser and longer the fan runs. Also, it seems that at the same time the fan is running, my ability to move the cursor/mouse around the screen ceases - and then the cursor seems to jump to different parts of the screen based on movements I made moments before. I've opened the case and vacuumed out dust I could see. Any ideas/thoughts? Thanks. John.

John, are you using the video on the board or do you have an add on card? The jerkiness and roaring fans indicate an overheating problem.

Thanks for the reply. I don't believe I have a separate video card installed - at least, nothing that seems like one shows up when I look at the list of hardware on the Device Manager list. This is (my wife's computer) not a computer that is into heavy gaming applications. Mostly internet surfing, word processing and some low level games.

Extra heat occurred to me as well. My problem is that I don't know how to resolve it - or whether I should try vs. getting a new computer. As I said, my attempt to clean out dust didn't seem to help. So, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. John.
