I'm unable to run setup.exe in order to install some applications (ej. Origin 60; RocketRaid Management Software) in my XP Professional SP2 system.I tried to run the setup files from the CD/DVD unit or after copy them in the Hard Drive(s) or after downloading from a web site (only RocketRaid tested) but in all cases I got the same failure. The only thing I can see after double clicking the setup.exe is the sand-clock cursor for about 30 sec and them it disapear but no error meassage. Any thoughts? Please HELP.

I agree, it sounds like it may be a bad (corrupted) file.

How can I find the corrupted file(s)?
Which are the possibilities?

The files you are downloading are probably at fault. Are you DLing from warez sites? What is the purpose of the Rocket RAID software? Is it RAID software as the name implies?

My 2¢... probably not a corrupted file (nor, coincidentally several of them).

There are several very common Installer/Setup programs (InstallShield, Windows Installer, etc.). The two I mentioned occasionally have some problems, and each has a different download-able "fix".

The point being that if the Installer/Setup program itself has issues, any/all programs using it for their setup.exe will exhibit the same symptoms. Right-clicking to Properties on your setup.exe file(s) may indicate which installer is being used - and that may point you towards a solution:

• updated msiexec and "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" in the case of Windows Installer (msi)

• InstallShield has "fixes" and info on it's own installer engine (their term, not mine).

Other Installers may also have their own fixes available on their websites.

Thanks a lot for your help!!! but this is definitively not the case. The programs I am trying to install are not warez software and the web sites are not warez sites neither. The softwares don't have any problem neither as they run normal in other of my computers and anyone seems to report a similar problem with them. The RocketRaid utility manage a PCI-X card that is used for instaling additional SATA II hard drives in my computer. The web site I downloaded the program is the web site of the company (http://www.highpoint-tech.com). Interesting, neither the original software that comes in the instalation CD (from the cd or after copying in the HD) nor the upgraded vs, downloaded from their web site, run in my computer. A similar situation is for the Origin software I am trying to install (a software for graphing/plotting). I am sure is nothing wrong with the files that come with the program. The problem is in my computer (system) although other softwares run (or install) normal. After having this problem, I formated my hard drives and install Win XP again. After doing that I was able to run Origin and RocketRaid setups and installed the programs. However I tried to the update for RocketRaid and I noted I have back the problem. Neither again Origin or RocketRaid run this week and they show the same failure -no run no error message-. So I have the problem again. I though it may be a virus, but I have a good antivirus installed and after searching in google, anyone seems to report a similar problem.
Thank you very much for your interest and help.

I agree with justcuz ! It sound VERY reasonable.
I'll look tomorrow morning when I get back in my office and will write back with the result of my research (InstallShield or Windows Installer) or otherone in common.
Thanks a lot, and I will pay the 2c...

You RIGHT justcuz (2c. for you!), both setup.exe files (origin and RocketRaid) use InstallShield Software (vs 5.52). In addition, the other setup.exe programs that I am able to run without problems are not associated to InstallShield. So it make sense that my problems are associated to InstallShield engine. I tried to solve the problem by updating the InstalShield or by following troubleshooting instructions in their web page but still not secede to fix this. Any further idea?. I'll write back when if found a solution.

Well, since it has still not resolved your problem, I can't see charging you the full price for my advice.

I have succeeded in fixing InstallShield before, so don't give up. Besides, other setups will depend on that installer. Going to InstallShield's website was/is the best step forward.

My experience with this same situation is from too long ago for me to detail how I did it. My advice then would be worth even less than the already-discounted !

Add some of your own ingenuity to InstallShield's advice, and you'll win this one.

FOUND IT !!!!!!!
I found a solution to the problem by disabling 'NMIndexingService' of the Msconfig. Just after disable this function, my InstallShield associated setup.exe files run again.
How I found it?
I was also having another problem in my computer when trying to shutting down always gets the message, WMS Idle on a box and I have to end task it in order to finish shutting down or rebooting. I though that the two problems may be related, so look for a solution.
Googleling I found a suggestion to disable 'NMIndexingService' so I tried and fortunately this fixed both issues!.
The way I did this is:
Start->run->msconfig->OK->Startup tab->NMBgMonitor, deactivate by clicking the box ->Restart. OR you also can stop all the process related to the NMIndexing in the Windows task manager.
The problem with this solution is every time I start the computer, a windows appear asking my for restore the MS configuration.
I will work on find the way to remove this service in a different way.
I would like to thanks to all people in Computing.net chat for helping me in find the solution.

Congratulations!

Good on you for posting back, and including all the details.

This may become helpful for others when they do a Search on Computing.net.

I had debated using "employ some lateral-thinking" in lieu of "your own ingenuity", but there ya go!

Woo-hoo! We have a winner!
