Comment:

I keep getting this error:
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. Incorrect Function. and in the log it says: Error: Installation Failed: E:\l386\asms. Error Message: Cannot copy to H/D.

I have changed Memory, M/Board,power supply, C/D Rom Player, H/Drive, Burnt up one computer by rebooting so many times. is there a fix for this or is microxxxxx C/D bad?

I have been trying to install XP for over two months.
Is there any way around this????/

THANK YOU
Charles

its one of the items you replaced already, hard drive ,cdrom ,cabling, jumpering, motherboard or ram.

usual work around which i assume you have already done, since you have been stuck for two months is to xcopy the i386 folder to the hard drive and run winnt.

a combo of these 2 articles q311755 and q307848

need to make a 9x boot disk and add smartdrv and xcopy to it

and then boot to the a prompt with cdrom support,
type smartdrv and press enter

change to the c drive and type md i386

a: enter
put xp cd in cdrom drive and

xcopy d:\i386 c:\i386 enter
c: enter
cd i386 enter
winnt enter
point location of files as c:\i386 enter
when done copying take floppy and let system boot automatically dont touch keyboard.

when prompted for install choices make them but on reboots let it go dont touch the keyboard.

there is a corrupt file on your install disc or maybe a scratch or dirt, remember it said it could not copy to hard drive!!!!!! I had had a similar problem and I borrowed another install disc, when it got to that error I just put in the second disc, it found the file it needed and completerd the install... hope i helped, i don't think richard understood the question.
