I am getting this error message whenever I try to connect a dsl modem: Failed To Query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed.
When I right click on the LAN settings, it comes back to without an ip address. It says IP address unavailable. This all occurred because I was getting the automatic ip addressing error. I tried the Winsock solution without any prevail. Any suggestions, I'm afraid to think my last solution is to reformat, in which case, I'd die. Too much files that I don't want to lose.

I had a similar problem.
It means the Modem can't connect to the ISP, so it can't query the ISP to get an IP address. (I think)Try checkin the connections or ring up your ISP (Sometimes the ISP had to enable the Connection from their side of the line)

Mark,
I recently found out that, originally, in earlier versions of Windows, the DEFAULT value was to Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP; however, since XP wants you to connect to the DSL/Cable via DHCP, the DEFAULT setting in TCP/IP (NetBIOS) is to Enable TCP/IP via DHCP. Even though DSL requires a static IP address; the computer automatically searches for a DHCP server... when a DHCP is not found, the IP address configures to a default address to avoid an error w/TCP/IP.
THE FIX: Simply change the setting for NetBIOS on each PC on your network; the setting is : Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.To do this: Start Menu > Settings > local area connection > properties > general tab > highlight Internet Protocol and click properties button > under the general tab...click advanced button > under the WINS tab... check "Enable NetBios over TCP/IP".
I tried this solution in the past and it didn't work, however....
I just did this after downloading and running the Winsock solution (which didn't solve my problem but I think it helped in conjunction with the solution I just posted.)
Last night my cable was down for over five minutes (TV was out as well). When it came back on, I was still connected...without rebooting!...never lost my IP address.
I hope this works as well for you.
Good Luck
SullyD

I had this problem on XP pro but was the LAN i couldn't connect to, i took off all the network settings and only enabled the tcp/ip, file sharing and client for microsoft networks. Seems to have worked but i will Enable NetBIOS to be on the safe side.
Cheers
P
