F8 boot option for only primary HD

May 14, 2011 at 15:55:57
Specs: Windows XPPro SP3
WinXP Pro SP3 ASUS P5Q
On my machine, F5 is the Safe Mode menu, F8 brings up a simple boot menu with option for floppy, CD & HD.
I have a removable HD drive/tray with a BOOTABLE clone HD of my primary HD, so I have 2 HDs.
However, F8 only shows the primary.
Does anyone know how to make F8 show an option to boot off my clone HD?

You would have to go into your BIOS and see if you have an option to boot from a USB device. If your enclosure is USB powered and you don't have that option in the BIOS, you can't boot from it. You could see if there is a BIOS update from the Asus site.

Thanks grasshopper, but I must not have explained the problem clearly. The second HD is in a swappable tray on SATA II, so it is not a USB device. It is a bootable clone of my primary HD. Any other suggestions?

How is it powered, by Esata? your bios isn't giving you the option to boot from an external device whether it be usb, esata etc. You still need that option in the bios or it will only recognize what is directly attatched to the mobo.

The 2nd HD is in a removable tray that is connected on the same SATA II cable as my primary HD. When I boot up with the 2nd HD acive (key-on), windows shows both drives, but lists my primary first as c:, and the second as e:.
The whole purpose of this setup is that, in the event of my primary failing, I want to be able to boot-up with F8 allowing me to choose my cloned HD as the boot HD.

You would go into the bios and set the primary drive as not installed and then set this second drive as the first boot device.

Just like you would do if the drive really died.
